Flash fiction is one of the quickest ways to help improve a learner's reading comprehension. In a very short piece, writers are able to convey a wide variety of emotions, themes, and narrative, as long as the reader is paying attention. In this class, we aim to use flash fiction to our advantage, honing our reading comprehension skills with pieces that are short and sweet. Each class will follow the same approximate format: - Introductions: A chance for new learners to introduce themselves and their reading interests. - Covering the Weekly Piece: After introductions, learners will be presented with the week's piece of flash fiction using a slideshow. Learners will also be given the piece in a PDF format that they can print for class. - Independent Reading: After being introduced to the piece, learners will be given time to read it thoroughly. Learners are encouraged to take notes on the piece. - Discussion: After finishing the piece, we will discuss it as a class. Students will be asked to give their initial thoughts, then discussion will be guided by a series of questions surrounding the piece. Week of February 11: "Making Friends" by Chris Higgins Week of February 18: "An Easy Cure for Insomnia" by Pratima Mitchell Week of February 25: "Flower of the Fern" retold by Jan Pienkowski Week of March 3: "Birthday Party" by Katharine Brush Week of March 10: "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin Learners are also encouraged to suggest any pieces of flash fiction that they are familiar with, or that they'd like to discuss in a group setting.

Hi! My name is Zach and I'm looking forward to sharing my love of the arts and the outdoors with students. If you don't see a time that works for you, or you'd like to suggest a class, shoot me a message!
I teach arts, do-it-yourself projects, and outdoor skills. I am passionate about applying my working knowledge of materials to art projects, as well as the outdoors. Sketchbooking, artistic techniques, and outdoor recreation are just a few of the subjects that I offer to learners on Outschool!
I have a degree in Educational Studies and Community Leadership. During the pursuit of my degree I worked in many classrooms teaching life skills and core curriculum. I also took on artistic endeavors, which allowed my photography to be put into print by a number of publications. While I loved teaching life skills and core classes, I found more of a passion teaching children art and outdoors skills. I think both areas spark creativity, and having a creative voice is very important as you grow. It allows you to approach life in a different manner, and makes things far more enjoyable!
It is one of my greatest beliefs that teaching kids what they want to learn is as important as teaching them what they need to learn. If you can ignite their passion for learning with a subject of their choice, they're more likely to learn ambitiously in other areas as well.
In addition to being an outdoors lover, I am also an avid writer and reader! I have contributed a fair amount of blog posts to fishing and outdoors websites, and plan to continue writing about my do-it-yourself approach to both.
