This reading class is for all growing readers! Each week, learners will explore either comprehension strategies or comprehension skills. Together, we will examine different types of reading material and apply strategies to skills to gain a deeper understanding. We will explore a variety of texts to identify which strategies pair best with the skill we are building for us to extrapolate as much meaning and context as possible. 

In this class, your learner will:
* Identify the author's purpose for writing the piece
* Examine text and explain why they may read that type of writing
* Differentiate skills from strategies
* List skills and strategies they use the most and those they can improve
* Reflect on what skills they used to gain comprehension after the first reading, how multiple readings can increase understanding
* List skills and strategies they use the most and those they can improve
* Integrate skills and strategies to increase comprehension
* Implement their new knowledge in collaborative reading comprehension

Your learner will read and/or listen to several short readings in each class. Writings to:
* entertain
* inform 
* explain
* persuade 

They will collaborate to identify the author's purpose and why they might need to read that type of material: 
* fun
* to learn
* instructions
* gain perspective

Session 1: Why is This Important? 
*What is a comprehension strategy and what is a comprehension skill
*Characterize, identify, prioritize
*Identify purpose (author's and reader's) and key indicators for strategy/skill to use

Session 2: Practice
*Review purpose of author and reader, strategies, and skills
*Using our list of strategies and skills, we will determine methods to deconstruct readings to gain the most meaning
*Guided and independant practice 

Session 3: Bringing it all Together + digital vs print
*Use what we have learned to break down the parts to comprehend new
*Discuss digital vs print media - research
*Consider best option for reading certain texts

Finally, we will discuss the research-based differences between reading digitally versus in print. Identify the pros and cons of both methods and how we can make the best choices based on our choice of reading material, our reading environment, and the desired outcome.

Note: This class will prioritize and focus on the strategies and skills your learner needs to build upon their reading comprehension. The readings will include high-interest pieces at a variety of levels, but may be lower than the student is capable of. This is an intentional decision as I do not want learners distracted by or anxious about their reading level. Please message me should you have any questions about this approach.

I'm Kristina...wife, mom of three boys and constant learner. I was a 2nd grade ESL teacher back in the day. I earned my graduate degree in education, yet have found I learn the most by remaining curious. I am a girly, girl at heart but have learned, in part from my sons, to be comfortable getting messy for the sake of learning (and just for fun)!  I value the relationships in my life, accessibility of educational opportunities, travel, and exploring a variety of ways toward personal growth.

I am committed to being the best human being I can. My classes don't have a religious aspect, they are created to allow each student to gain greater self-awareness. With such awareness, students will be able to apply what they learn toward living their best life, whatever that means for them/your family. I am looking forward to sharing my interests and knowledge with you/your child(ren).
