In this course, Reading to Learn with Nonfiction Text, the students will be presented information through the Reading Workshop mini-lesson model of instruction. The lessons reflect a range of Informational Reading learning standards for the second grade level. The components of each lesson includes: a group meeting, a connection, teaching point, read aloud, teaching-demonstration & discussion, active engagements-students apply new skills, link- recap learning, small group instruction & conferring,mid- workshop teaching- reinforcement of skills, and a share meeting as the conclusion. The students will be introduced to nonfiction structure and how to read a nonfiction text through authentic literature using the mentor text to model nonfiction reading strategies. The course makes a connection between reading and learning about the world around us. This course spotlights skills and reading strategies essential to readers of expository nonfiction. Introducing strategies in: reading and note taking, determining importance of finding main idea and supporting details, figuring out and using new content-specific vocabulary, and comparing and contrasting analyzing information learned across texts. The students are guided to ask then respond to questions as they read to develop skills in key ideas to synthesize, process, and comprehend their nonfiction text. The following meeting titles will be presented through power point presentation in our bitmoji classroom where students will meet to conduct their reading and complete their assignments. As an second grade elementary classroom teacher, teaching the nonfiction reading genre with Reading to Learn- Nonfiction Text, is one of the best ways to foster a students ability to learn new information about the world around us. This course of study helps the young readers develop newly found interests in reading that fosters their reading independence. I have seen students develop a deeper understanding and new interests in content areas of study by presenting this course.
