During this course your little leader will learn how to successfully summarize a fiction story. Our class will begin with me reading a fiction story for each week. We will discuss main character, setting, and any skills that are needed to have a better understanding of that book. Next, we will review what a summary is (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then). The students will then help me develop what they feel is the best summary for that story. Each week we will dive deep into what a problem and a solution are to help us better figure out our summary. After we have written our five sentence summary we will complete a directed drawing that is an illustration from an element of our story. Before the course is over your little learner should be able to more confidently write a summary without needing as much guidance and great listening and leadership skills from following the directions on the directed drawings. First: I will read our book for the week to the class so they can get a better understanding of our story and who our characters are. Next: I will guide them through how to write a summary and each student will write a 5 sentence summary. Last: I will guide them through a directed drawing so they will have an illustration to pair with each summary that they can also color if they would like! By the end of each class they will have a 5 sentence summary and a directed drawing to pair with it. Here is the list of books we will be focussing on each week! Week 1: A Visitor for Bear Week 2: Edward the Emu Week 3: The Leaf Thief Week 4: Except Antarctica Week 5: The Poisoned Apple Week 6: Turk and Runt Week 7: Alexander who used to be rich last Sunday Week 8: Rulers of the Playground Week 9: The Barnabus Project Our class will be welcoming and open to all levels as long as each student is willing to try! This class is to build confidence and leadership for each student to take charge after reading a fiction story. Comprehension is so important for young learners and by being able to successfully summarize a story, without retelling the entire thing is a wonderful skill. Learners will interact by showing their drawings or reading their summaries if they would like to at the end of each session. My hope is that by the end they will independently be able to write a summary as I am reading the story. I look forward to working with each and every one of my students!

Hey learning leaders!
My name is Jayme, and I am so excited to be a part of your learning adventure!
As an elementary school teacher I have loved helping children find their voice in education and watching them grow into amazing leaders and students.
I began teaching dance when I was 18 and then pursued a career dancing and performing for The Walt Disney Company shortly after. I have always loved working with kids so becoming a teacher just seemed to fit perfectly into my life path. Before finishing my degree I became a substitute and quickly realized my love of teaching and specifically for elementary school. After graduating I became a 2nd grade teacher and have been teaching elementary school and dance ever since.
I believe every student is a leader! I teach habits in order to help learners be the best they can be. I will guide them in what they need to be successful, for not only this year, but for years to come. I love working however your student works best, whether that be in small groups or one-to-one. Learners who are engaged in what they are learning will continue to grow and I am happy to guide them along the way! They will feel welcome and respected in my class so let's get learning!
