This class seeks to engage students in meaningful discussion about books while also touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone, and voice. More than anything, though, these classes will be fun and social experience, with the goal of making these classic stories relatable rather than stuffy and boring. We’ll spend the first five minutes of each class getting settled and recapping what happened in that week’s reading. I’ll then ask learners for any opening thoughts they might have in the section. From there, I’ll bounce questions off student observations so that they truly lead the conversation— though of course, I always have some additional discussion topics prepared just in case! Students should attend the first class having read approximately 1/4 of the selected book! While reading ahead isn't "against the rules", it can become difficult to avoid giving spoilers-- so we advise doing your best to stick to the reading schedule. Please note that students must independently purchase or borrow the month's selected book-- copies are not provided by myself or Outschool. These books can be purchased anywhere books are sold (in both ebook and print form) and are widely available at libraries.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will read a new "classic" middle grade book each month.
Students will practice reading comprehension and analysis as they discuss the book with the teacher.

Orientación para padres
All the books chosen for this class are widely considered suitable for middle school students. However, it's crucial for adults to take into account the unique reading capabilities, emotional maturity, and socio-emotional requirements of their specific learner before enrolling them in this book club. It's worth noting that some of the selected books delve into complex topics including bullying, survival scenarios, themes of sexuality, and some of the more somber episodes of history. Parents and guardians should be aware of these elements to ensure a positive and enriching reading experience for their child.
Below are my general classroom rules and policies. These will also be explained to students when we begin class!
-For everyone's safety, and to ensure an engaging and social experience, students are required to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned such that we can both hear and see them.
-Students are asked not to use filters or virtual backgrounds-- though if there is an important reason to use a virtual background, please just let me know ahead of time that your student will be using one (no questions asked!).
-Students will be asked to introduce themselves by sharing their name, pronoun, and a favorite book.
