*For the summer semester (June-August) we will read a different short text every week. Texts will be a mix of narrative and informational. Learners can join at any time! In this ongoing class, students will meet twice a week for a guided reading lesson. Students will learn new vocabulary and reading strategies, practice their comprehension skills, participate in word study, and learn to answer comprehension questions in writing. All lessons will follow the research-based, guided reading system created by Jan Richardson, an expert in guided reading. Below is the specific class sequence that will be followed. Day One: 1. Vowel Teams 2. New Vocabulary (that correlates to the week's book) 3. Book Introduction and Reading (a K or L leveled text) 4. Comprehension Discussion (retelling, factual/inferential/critical thinking questions) Day Two: 1. Vowel Teams Review (same as Day One) 2. Vocabulary Review (same as Day One) 3. Reading (re-reading the whole text from Day One OR reading a new section of the same text from Day One) 4. Comprehension Discussion (retelling, factual/inferential/critical thinking questions) 5. Guided Writing (answering a comprehension question in writing) *For students to be most successful in this guided reading group, they should be able to read a Level K or L text with support, regardless of age. Examples of Level K and L texts include: "Horrible Harry" by Suzy Kline, "Cam Jansen" by David Adler, and "Nate the Great" by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. If your child can read around 80-90% of the words accurately in these books, answer factual questions independently, but needs support answering inferential and critical thinking questions, this is the perfect class for him/her! *Additionally, please note that for effective teaching and learning to occur, students will be asked to read-aloud. Students may also be asked to read with a partner in breakout Zoom sessions. If your child will feel uncomfortable reading aloud in front of a small group or with a partner, please feel free to request private guided reading lessons. *Finally, I strongly encourage cameras to remain on throughout each class. When students have their cameras on, it's easier for me to gauge the pace of each individual student and the class, identify when students are confused and/or need support, and effectively manage behavior so learning can occur. Thank you for partnering with me and encouraging your child to leave his/her camera on!
Metas de aprendizaje
These are the objectives that your student will be working towards throughout the entire ongoing session. Once your student has met these goals, he/she will be ready to move to the next guided reading level and group.
1. Students will be able to read a Level K and/or L text with 90-100% accuracy.
2. Students will be able to answer factual, inferential, and critical thinking questions from a Level K and/or L text independently, 90-95% of the time.

I am a certified New York State teacher who loves teaching students to become better readers, while inspiring them to love reading at the same time! I have my Bachelor's Degree in Childhood and Special Education and my Master's Degree in Literacy. Before choosing to be a stay-at-home mom and homeschool my own kids, I worked in a public school as a second grade teacher, third grade teacher, and reading specialist for kindergarten-fourth grade. In addition to teaching the typical public school curriculum, I have taught students with disabilities and 504 plans, prepared third and fourth grade students for state testing, and taught English Language Learners. Currently, I am an online ESL teacher and a college professor who teaches undergraduate and graduate students how to become excellent teachers and literacy specialists. I hope to see your student in my classroom!
