In this four week class, we will be discussing the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum. While reading this book, we will be creating a souvenir scrapbook. Each class period, and also for homework, students will create a new piece(s) for our scrapbook project. I really enjoy creating these keepsake scrapbooks with students as they read a book. Reading a book is a journey. It is not just a journey we take with the characters themselves, but also with ourselves. In my opinion, each book we read shapes us - showing us qualities in the characters that we either want to emulate or avoid. Hopefully, this will shape our character for the better. When we go on a vacation, we usually buy a souvenir. I consider these projects to be souvenirs from our journey through the book. During the creation of these scrapbooks, students will be doing a variety of activities. Just a sampling of some of the skills they will be working on for the pieces of their scrapbook include, but are not limited to: writing a summary making a drawing based on descriptions from the book recording new vocabulary words journal writing writing about text connections jotting down examples of literary devices Students will be taught to engage with the text themselves as they are reading by learning different symbols that they can jot down as they read. This will increase their awareness of literary devices and assist them in making personal connections with the text (text to self, text to text, text to media, text to world) while also aiding in reading comprehension. This will also make them feel more comfortable sharing during discussion time because they will have engaged with the text prior to book club. Literature concepts that will be taught: Problem/Solution Cause/Effect realationships Making text connections Simile Character comparison Making inferences Metaphors Personification Onomatopoeia Hyperbole Alliteration Listening comprehension concepts that will be taught: traits of an active listener note taking Class 1: Introduction to the concept of Stop and Jot to aid in interacting with the text/discussion of a fairy tale/Introduction to Frank Baum/set up our scrapbook/discuss chapter/take notes about the setting/learn about similes and look for examples in the text. We will discuss chapters 1 - 5 so students should have this read prior to class. Class 2: Discuss chapters 6 - 10/add pieces to our scrapbook. Students should read the assigned chapters before class. Class 3: Discuss chapters 11 - 16/add pieces to our scrapbook. Students should read the assigned chapters before class. Class 4: Discuss chapters 17 - 21/add pieces to our scrapbook. Students should read the assigned chapters before class. Class 5: Discuss chapters 22 - 24/add pieces to our scrapbook. Students should read the assigned chapters before class. In this class period, we will also be doing a compare/contrast with the book vs. the movie. To be able to engage in the discussion, students should watch the movie prior to class.

My name is Jennifer Dodge, but my students call me Mrs. Jen. I am a certified early childhood teacher with a B.S in Early Childhood Education and a minor in music from Samford University. I have spent 12 years in the classroom teaching preschool, kindergarten, and language arts to first through seventh graders. For the past eleven years, I have had the awesome privilege of homeschooling my own three children who are now ages 22, 20, and 16. Currently, I teach kindergarten in a private school .
I am excited to help students learn to read and LOVE to read through hands on activities so that they will become lifelong learners! You will find that many of my classes are geared toward developing reading skills, novel studies, and hands-on book clubs, and book clubs that center around historical fiction so that we can take a deep dive into the historical aspect of the novel. I also love to teach preschool and kindergarten aged children, so I will also be providing classes that involve practice with fine and large motor skills, music and movement, and beginning reading, math, and science skills so that my students will be ready for school.
As a former homeschool mom, I also look forward to being able to provide classes that support other homeschool moms. If there is an area where their child needs extra enrichment or assistance, or if there is a subject that a mom just simply hates to teach, I would LOVE to partner with her in the homeschooling of her children.
I believe that learning to read and write NEVER has to be boring! I teach my classes with great enthusiasm so that my students will see my love for the subject. I hope this joy will come through the Zoom call and our classroom activities so that they will be excited to read and write as well. Reading and writing is a skill that every person will need throughout their lifetime. It is my goal as a teacher to make the learning of these skill enjoyable and exciting.
I look forward to having the opportunity to teach your child!
