𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕚𝕤 ℚ𝕦𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘❓ The art of quilling, which dates back to the 1500s, is using thin strips of colorful paper and turning them around an object to make coils. You may have recognized the root word “quill”, which is a feather, formerly used as a pen when dipped into ink. The original art form used quills to turn the paper around to form the coils. Instead of quills, these days people use quilling needle tools, pencils, or toothpicks. People that practice the artform of quilling are often called quillers. 𝕎𝕙𝕪 𝕥𝕣𝕪 ℚ𝕦𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘❓ People choose to learn quilling for multiple reasons. First off, the historical artform is beautiful. The supplies are basic and not costly. Even the kits, when purchased, are not expensive. Quilling promotes hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills in children. It boosts creativity in people of all ages, and promotes gift giving, as the projects make lovely cards and gifts. Lastly, almost everyone reports that it makes them feel relaxed and calms them, so it’s very beneficial for those suffering with anxiety. “𝑴𝒔. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒆, 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒔𝒐𝒐𝒐𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒙𝒆𝒅,” 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑰 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒎𝒚 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔. The quilling shapes taught are the round coil, marquis, and the teardrop. The video will be posted on the morning (EST) of the first day that the FLEX class begins. Learners have one week to watch and make the quilling project. Please post pictures of the finished creation in the classroom, so that we can all admire the artwork! I will personally give feedback to each learner. Students should also engage and add positive comments to their classmates' pictures. ❄️❄️❄️ *If your learner is already enrolled in my ongoing Quilling Club, it will not be necessary to enroll in this one-time class. Snowflakes are one of our January Quilling Club projects. This is a relaxing art form that improves fine motor skills! ❄️❄️❄️ Learner Supply List: suggested quilling paper or construction/copier paper - 6 strips of 3 different colors (18 strips total) liquid glue (no glue sticks or tape) scissors pencil, toothpick, or quilling tool ribbon (if making an ornament) gemstones and sequins (optional)

Scissors can be sharp. Also, if you choose to order quilling tools for your learner, please take note that they are sharp as well. Please keep a close eye on your learner during this class. Some parental assistance may be required to help children with poor fine motor skills.
There is a YouTube video https://youtu.be/WooUWTRBHxs that you may watch with your child if you would like. It is a 3 minute video of me going over instructions about what can be expected in quilling class and how to prepare. You do not need to have a YouTube account to be able to watch this video. Thank you!
