You're on your way to becoming a triple threat-- you can sing, you can dance, you can act. But something is missing! You got your dream role and have been handed a score, only to find that it looks like you're reading another language that you never learned. In lessons, you're constantly looking at your music and wondering what all the different markings in your music mean. This is the class for you! The purpose of this class is to give a basic knowledge of music theory for high school vocal students, with a special focus on musical theater. The goal is that you can look at a score and learn how the music serves the song and, ultimately, the show. Using small excerpts from classical to modern musical theater, we will explore the elements of basic music theory together, with a special focus on melody, harmony, and rhythm. Classes will be interactive. Students may be asked to sing but can always decline, no questions asked. The class does assume a rudimentary knowledge of reading a musical staff, including orientation to note names and clefs. Worksheets will be provided to help students learn these and other concepts. While being able to play examples on the piano would be helpful, it is not at all mandatory. Sprinkled throughout the course will be exposure to a large variety of musical theater, learning musical terms and styles, and hints and tips for singing musical theater. My teaching style is conversational, creative, and cooperative, and I look forward to the music and ideas students bring to the class! Class 1, Week of March 4.
