Hello, and thank you for considering my class! I am Teacher Sydney, and I hope to meet you soon! Please feel free to reach out with any questions or requests! :) Students in my class are motivated by the large variety of fun activities we do, TONS of praise by the teacher, brain breaks (such as quick exercises) and challenges that are just difficult enough (Example: Who can beat the teacher? How many words can you read? Can you beat the time it took you last time?). Each activity that I do in class is power-packed to help strengthen reading skills while also being rather fun and engaging. We play games such as "Difference Hunt, Mystery Memory Mix, Lightning Round, Word Sliders, Write the Mystery Word, Segmentation Auscultation, Time to Rhyme, Roll and Read, Letter Blender, Roll a Silly Sentence, What is Missing?, We're Going Camping, BINGO, Memory, and Tic-Tac-Toe." And the list is still growing! Check out the bottom of this class description for examples of these games. Pedagogy: I focus on phonemic awareness in my class to build strong reading foundations! We practice phoneme isolation, blending, segmenting, adding, deleting, and/or substituting sounds orally as well as visually so students can more easily read new words in the future. I do not encourage students to guess based on the picture or use any other hints. We focus on sounding out each word based on the letter sounds/phonics rules we know. After class, I provide a summary after class of what we did and link free resources to further your child's knowledge on the topics we covered in class. This may be in the form of worksheets, links to videos or ideas for games you can play at home, etc. The recordings are shared automatically. I will hide the week's recordings at the end of every week. *I curate each class based on my learners' needs! This schedule is somewhat flexible given what my learners need help with. ~~~ Game examples: Difference Hunt: "Stop, steer, drain. Which word is different, and why?" Mystery Memory Mix: "We spell "chip" C-H-I-P. I have ihcp on the board. Can you put "chip" back in order?" Lightning Round: A fast paced game testing how fast you can read words we have been practicing. Word Sliders: Another fast paced game testing how fast you can read words we have been practicing. Write the Mystery Word: "Write the word "shop" on your whiteboard." Segmentation Auscultation: "Tell me the sounds in the word "frog."" Time to Rhyme: "Name all the words you can think of that rhyme with "mat."" Roll and Read: Roll the dice and see which words you get to read! Can you beat your time from last time? Letter Blender: "We're starting with the word "cat." Now take off the "c" and replace it with a "r." What do we get?" Build a Silly Sentence: Students take turns choosing from two words and thus build a sentence! What is Missing?: Example: "AB_D_FG_IJ_LM__P." or, "The k_d l_kes to f_sh." Etc. We're Going Camping: The teacher starts by naming three things to bring "camping" and the students have to spot the pattern! Example: I'm bringing shorts, a ship, and sheep.

**1) Classes Taught:**
I specialize in teaching courses that focus on introducing literature, critical thinking, and history to young learners. My repertoire includes classes on reading, mythology, literature, and logic, offering students a diverse array of subjects to explore and engage with.
**2) Professional Background:**
With a background in humanities (literature, history, and Great Books), I bring a multidisciplinary perspective to my teaching practice. I strongly believe in continuing my education post-graduation, so I have continued to push myself to explore philosophy, ancient mythologies, literary traditions, and cultural beliefs from around the world.
**3) Teaching Philosophy:**
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a deep belief in the transformative power of education. I see teaching not merely as a transmission of facts, but as a way to life. My goal is to create dynamic learning environments where students feel empowered to question, critique, and engage critically with course material, fostering intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. I employ questions, movement, visuals, songs, and physical at-home items to make lessons engaging and memorable!
I believe in the importance of cultivating critical thinking in the classroom, encouraging students to approach texts and topics with an open mind and a spirit of inquiry. Through thoughtful analysis, much dialogue, and collaborative inquiry, we can navigate the complexities of human experience and broaden our understanding of the world around us.
**4) Fun and Personal:**
When I'm not in the classroom, you can often find me spending time with my family. My husband, two sons, and I love to explore the great outdoors (we are located in the Sonoran desert!), cook, read, and talk together! I have a passion for community, and love taking trips to visit my parents and friends.
Making learners feel heard and welcome is one of my top priorities! My classes are very learner-centered. I differentiate every lesson to make it as suitable as possible to your learner’s particular needs, learning styles, and interests.
---
That's a glimpse into who I am as a teacher, scholar, and individual. I look forward to embarking on this educational journey with you and exploring the wonders of literature, culture, and history together!
