Experiencia de clase

Looking for some one-on-one coaching for an upcoming audition, drama competition, or just to refine specific acting skills? These one-on-one coaching sessions are tailored specifically to your acting objectives. Whether you need help with selecting and understanding a Shakespeare monologue or just getting more confident with your cold reading skills, our time together can help get you ready to take the stage.

Some of my specialties include:
- theatrical audition technique
- monologue selection & preparation
- voice use and diction
- textual analysis
- improving cold reading for callbacks
- Shakespeare performance

Note: I do not do coaching for vocal (singing) or film/television auditions.

How This Class Works
To make sure I can help you meet your acting goal(s), I like to get to know a little bit about you and your project. I want to make sure that we both have what we need to make our time together a success!

Before you enroll in an acting session...
+ Contact me and let me know you're interested in a coaching session (or two or three!).
+ I'll have you fill out a short form that tells me more about your needs and goals.
+ We'll find a day and time that works for us to have the coaching session.

Before our session...
+ You'll post a copy of your script/monologue/performance piece (if you already have it) in the classroom.
+ I'll post any preparation work you might need to do (suggested monologues or other materials you'll need to look at ahead of time).
+ I will create a plan/schedule for our time together that addresses your goals and post it in the classroom

Below you can see an idea of what our process working together might look like. Since every actor's needs are different, your plan will be tailored to your needs and may not look exactly like this.

Here's an example session of a what monologue preparation session might cover:
+ Review goals, ask clarifying questions and discuss monologue selection.
+ Monologue cold read and textual analysis.
+ Review acting choices and interpretation options. Select the strongest choice.
+ Mark monologue for pauses, inflection, and diction.
+ Full reading with strong choices and marked beats.

Optional followup:
If you are performing a piece with a lot of blocking I would love to see a video of you performing it with full physicality. This is completely optional but a good way to get feedback beyond your upper body performance. We will discuss this in your session and details will be posted in the classroom after we meet.

Not sure if this is what you need? Send me a message and we'll see if this is fit for you.
Metas de aprendizaje
My hope with every acting class is that the performers will leave with more confidence, techniques that are easy to apply, and a willingness to take risks on stage.

Good morrow to my fellow actors, writers, and literary scholars! I'm Ms. Drea (she/her) aka "Director of Chaos" and I'm obsessed with literary and performing arts! They are my absolute passions and I love to share them with everyone I meet.

My classrooms are inclusive and all learners are welcome. I do my best to foster spaces where everyone present feels like they belong. An atmosphere of kindness and respect is what I strive for every day. I am more interested in building relationships with learner than having a schedule full of packed classes. Because of this philosophy, I focus mostly on multi-week and ongoing classes, so I can get to know the young people I'm working with on a personal level.

I know it can be a little nerve-wracking to try a new class with a new teacher. Will we get along? Will you enjoy the experience? Because of that I always offer new learners interested in trying a class a code for $20 off your first class. Use the code LEETRY20 if you want to give it a chance!

Experience: I've been teaching middle school and high school students to fall in love with words on the stage and on the page since 2009. I've taught in private and public schools as well as with youth theatre organizations and literary nonprofits. I've directed numerous youth theatre productions and have loved every minute of it. I'm currently the Programs Director for a literary nonprofit where I have run the youth fiction contest since 2017.

My education: Degrees don't mean everything, but I happen to really love learning in a collegiate environment and majored in things I am passionate about. I have a bachelor's degree in literature and writing from California State University, San Marcos, and a master's in Educational Technology. I completed courses in young adult novel writing through Arizona State University's Your Novel Year Program. All of my theatre experience is lived, through many years of acting, directing, and participating in the theatre arts community.

My teaching philosophy: I teach with growth-based learning in mind. I want students to reflect on their learning process and use those reflective elements to guide instruction as well as inform my analysis of their growth. I love giving students choices and flexibility in their projects, with options to explore things that drive their curiosity. All learning is conversation and I don't position myself as an expert, but instead, as a life-long learner exploring with other curious people.
