The inside of your body is an amazing place. You have cells, tissues, organs, and systems working together to keep you alive. We will explore the neurological system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system and the senses, the digestive system, and the musculoskeletal system. We will learn what they are, the components of the system, and how they work. We will watch a short video and then we will complete a project or experiment every day related to the system we are studying. Our camp schedule will be: Day 1: The Neurological System - Brain, spinal cord, nerves / We will be making a playdough brain. Day 2: The Cardiovascular System - Heart, Blood Vessels, and Blood / We will be making a basic, working stethoscope. Day 3: The Respiratory System and the Senses - The Lungs and Breathing, the Senses / We will be making a model of the lungs. Day 4: The Digestive System - The Mouth, Stomach, and Intestines/ We will be doing a digestive system experiment. Day 5: The Musculoskeletal System - The Bones and Muscles/ We will be making a model of the arm. We will complete a project every day. All projects are designed to be completed by the student, but they will need some assistance cutting parts of their project on Day 2. You can pre-cut the items prior to the day of class. You will need the following materials: Day 1: Playdough in three colors Day 2: We need the TOP of a plastic water bottle. Cut off the bottom of a plastic water bottle (approximately 4 inches from the top which is the side where the cap screws on) plus an empty paper towel tube, tape (Masking tape works best.) Day 3: Two plastic zip lock bags, two paper or plastic disposable straws, tape Day 4: Slice of bread, two bowls, water, vinegar, a towel, two forks Day 5: Three empty toilet paper tubes, three popsicle sticks, two balloons (round balloons work best), tape

We will be studying the human body systems including the neurological, digestive, skeletal/muscular, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. We will be using correct terms for body parts within these systems. We will not be covering the reproductive system. We will discuss the kidneys and the bladder in our study of the digestive system.
We will complete a project or experiment for each class. We may use scissors during the project. An adult should be available to assist if necessary.
Students will need adult assistance on Day 2. They will need a plastic water bottle to be cut in half prior to the class.
Allergy alert: Playdough may contain wheat or wheat products.
Educational science videos are used during this class. Some of these videos may be from YouTube.

Licenciatura en Sociología desde Minors: Biology, Chemistry, and Writing
Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.
Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Life in ..." history classes where students learn about key times in history by experiencing children and families' lives in that time period. "Paint like ..." art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Kid Cuisine classes are cooking classes for Young Chefs based on historic foods and science topics. Students should be prepared to make, explore, and create during class. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
Annette spent the first nine years of her professional life working in the medical field. She worked as a Transplant Coordinator, retrieving organs for transplantation, and she worked in research. When she was five years old she got her first microscope (which she still has). She also became obsessed with the brain at the age of five. She made her own model of the brain, which she also still has to this day.
Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact Annette so she can work with you and your child.
