During this 4 session, 1 week craft camp, I will lead students in creating four mixed media, collage paintings of notable historical Black figures. Each weekly session will focus on one person who has made significant contributions to American society. I will show the students how to create colorful collage portraits in the likeness of each historical figure. Students will paint backgrounds with acrylic paint. They will layer the painting with a photo (print out provided) of the featured historical figure, 3-D paint, & printed quotes. Students will have the option to include more elements for added texture such as rhinestones, buttons, yarn and magazine clippings. Because of the collage technique we will be using, students will not have to know how to draw in order to produce beautiful, powerful, artistic pieces. We will apply this same mixed-media, collage painting technique to a portrait of each featured person. Consequently, students will grow in their artistic expression across all four paintings. While we create and wait for paint to dry, I will share some interesting facts about the featured historical figure. We will explore his/her childhood, rise to fame, positive contributions to society, and family life. Students will participate by taking turns reading the slides, asking and answering questions. All the information will be age-appropriate with the aim of honoring the person's memory and whetting the students' appetites for learning about Black History. Monday- Shirley Chisholm Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Shirley Chisholm who was a politician, civil rights advocate, women's rights advocate, presidential candidate and author. Tuesday- George Washington Carver Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring George Washington Carver who was a prominent scientist, innovator, inventor, professor, visionary and author. Wednesday- Zora Neale Hurston Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Zora Neal Hurston who was a prolific writer, collector of Black Folklore, anthropologist and author. Thursday- Malcolm X Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring who was master orator. intellectual, father, husband, civil rights leader, visionary, motivator and author. Friday- I will post a mini-review quiz for students to complete on their own and send back to me in a message by Sunday. I will also gift summary cards (pdf) of the four featured historical figures for the students to have as easy references.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I present my historical information on my lived experience as an African-American in the United States of America coupled with my masters degree in social work which has allowed me to study the affects of historical events and laws in the United States of America on its citizens. My masters degree has also trained me to handle and manage difficult situations, sensitive information and empower marginalized groups in America. Because of my passion for history, educating young minds and accuracy, I spend hours on researching and crafting each class that I offer and work hard to sensitively, represent marginalized voices in my classes.
I have also taken undergraduate courses in African-American history under expert professors. I have over 10 years of teaching in and outside of the the traditional classroom. I have 10 years of professional experience working with primarily African-American youth in foster care which equipped me to handle delicate matters with professionalism and tact. Cumulatively, I possess over twenty years of experience working with and teaching youth of all ages. I have worked as a childcare worker, case manager, teacher, homeschool parent and have volunteered many hours in children's programs. I am also an avid crafter with sewing skills. All of these qualifications have lended themselves to me successfully teaching African-American history on Outschool with excellent reviews from parents and consistent 5-star ratings.
