𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐅𝐔𝐍 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐄 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠!

Some people claim to be "concrete thinkers." That may be true, but did you know that you can train your brain to think and understand abstract ideas? On state assessments and entrance exams for private schools, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆. If they haven't been taught explicitly how to do this, they struggle, and their reading scores reflect that gap in their learning. This class aims to solve that problem and learners will train their brains to understand the abstract by studying the the elements of literary analysis. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲.

Critical thinkers are independent, solution-oriented people who understand themselves and the world in which they live. They solve problems, set and meet goals, are creative, make better decisions, communicate effectively, reflect, form reasoned opinions and judgments, and are more equipped to have success in school, work, and life. Metacognition, or thinking about thinking, can be taught! And these skills are more easily acquired if the learning tasks are interesting to kids. This is why we will use film clips in this class. As a bonus, students learn concepts that build a foundation for literary analysis. This class prepares students to analyze literature and talk about books using the same devices they learn from watching film.

🧐 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄:
Direct teaching on literary analysis
Watch a short sketch, commercial, or scene from a film.
Analysis, evaluation, and synthesis to form opinions and arguments.
**Film clips are taken from Disney, Pixar, commercials, and other movies.**

📚 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭:
It takes 39 weeks to cover all of the concepts listed in the syllabus. Students who take this class and then discuss literature with our reading teachers in other classes have an advantage with their solid foundation of critical thinking and understanding of literary analysis to discuss literature. 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵.

𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬--The back-and-forth work between a student and teacher significantly benefits a student if done well. We follow best practices in designing class time, assignments, and routines. According to Pennington Publishing, effective writing feedback (or grading) is:
• Specific, not general
• Immediate, not postponed
• Routine with a revision / feedback cycle
• Explanatory
• The right amount
• Targeted to the most critical issues
• Varied (written, audio, and video comments)
• Holding students accountable
Metas de aprendizaje
