This is an Art2Learn class, so we will learn a little about Pablo Picasso, his most popular art style that created the "Cubism" movement. We will learn a little about what was going on during this time in history as students explore playing with lines and shapes to create a self-portrait in this style. The will create their own portrait from a photo or by looking in a mirror, drawing on their own interpretation of this style. I will show a number of his portraits (none of his 'nudes' will be on display), so they can be inspired while drawing theirs, first with pencil, then over those lines with a Sharpie marker. Student will then paint their portrait with the medium of their choice. I used a good brand of watercolors (cheaper ones will not give the intensity of color for this "Pop" style), but acrylic paints or markers may be used. (Markers or watercolors will be easier to work inside their lines and get 'clean' edges). I will be teaching and demonstrating MY techniques, while encouraging the student to find their own creative voice in THEIR interpretation of this style. Questions are permitted at any time, and if no loud household noise on their end, I'm happy for students to stay unmuted and engage in conversation or ask questions. Students may show their pieces at the end of class to me and the other students, but this is optional.
Metas de aprendizaje
The student will learn who Pablo Picasso and about the cubism movement that he began. They will view some of his paintings (I will not display any of his nudes), and create their own interpretation of 'cubism'.
I will create along with the students and give instruction, but I encourage students to explore their own creativity and find their 'voice' using line, texture, and colors of their choice. They should feel free to 'paint outside the lines'!
Class is informal and I will talk about Picasso and Cubism for the first few minutes, but then they are welcome to ask questions as we create our own interpretation of this art style.

Lista de útiles escolares
Paper (I recommend watercolor paper. (I recommend a Canson XL "watercolor" wire-bound journal as a good beginners journal. The watercolor paper can stand up to paint and water, but works well for simple sketching as well as glue and collage material. They can be found in many Michaels stores, but I ordered my most recent one from Amazon: https://amzn.to/2XzEI0Q and it is the 9x12, though there is a 7x10. Just make sure it says "Watercolor" on the front. The 'Mixed Media" Canson XL is a good choice as well...just will not hold up to as much water if student will be doing much watercolor painting. - If markers will be used, the student could work on a heavier piece of paper ("cardstock"). Copy/printer paper will be too thin. -pencil & eraser - paints or markers (I used a Jane Davenport watercolors. They can be purchased at Michaels [call ahead to see if they stock them], if you're interested in getting them, or you can order them from Amazon: https://amzn.to/3iVERUm). - brushes - water jar - old rag & paper towels -Black Sharpie fine tip marker (for outlining)

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.
I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.
I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.
I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny
** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
