There are many types of poems. I am going to introduce to the learners four types - haikus, limericks, acrostics, and alliteration poems. Day One - the haiku poem. This is a Japanese poem that is fun to create. We will have a discussion about them and learn some history and geography. I will show some examples of old style haikus, and then some fun haikus other students have created. The learners will then create their own. Day Two - the alliteration poem. This is a poem that repeats a speech sound, usually consonants, in a word sequence. I will show them examples and then they will write one of their own. Children enjoy writing this type of poem. Day Three - the acrostic poem. I will share some history of this type of poem. There are several variations, but we will focus on creating a secret code acrostic. The learners will then have the knowledge to send secret code messages to their friends! Day Four - the limerick poem. After sharing some history and geography of limericks, I will show the learners examples of funny limericks and teach the special rhythm that these poems need to have. They will then create one of their own. All of these classes are comfortable and safe. I always love to answer any questions to help the learners. They will be free to share their ideas with everyone as we create. I want them to have fun, but I want them to use their manners so everyone can speak. No prior experience with poems needed with this class.

My name is Melanie Thomas, and I am very much looking forward to working with your child! As I think about the classes I want to teach, I am leaning toward creating classes about different types of poems, natural skin care for teenagers (this one will be so much fun!!), having a math multiplication fact class that will improve your child's math skills, as well as several other ideas that are brewing away inside my brain. Do you have any suggestions for me? Be sure and keep an eye out for my classes, and I'll bet you or your child will see a class they can't resist taking!
I am a Arkansas certified teacher. My professional background includes teaching elementary students in a brick and mortar building, tutoring several age levels as a teacher with Sylvan Learning Center and Club Z In-Home Tutoring, as well as being a much requested substitute teacher in elementary and middle school classrooms. I also have an English as a Second Language endorsement to my teaching certificate, and a Masters in Adult Education.
My desire is to impress upon students that everyone is smart, but they are smart in different ways. I believe in working with students so that they are comfortable. This will allow them to work hard to achieve their goals, reaching for the stars!
A fun fact about me.....I have been a background actor in four movies! That was so much fun!
