Experiencia de clase

We will read the book over a span of 4 days in a read aloud format during the class. We will discuss the events of the assigned reading in a respectful manner giving all students the chance to respond if they so wish to during class. We will have one craft per day which will be part of the pirate diorama presented on Thursday.

Day 1: Introductions, Chapters 1-3, make a pirate and treehouse craft.
Skills: setting, character analysis, prediction
Supplies needed: modeling clay or construction paper - your child can choose what to make their pirate out of. They can be creative! We don't want all the projects to be the same. Some ideas: paper, clay, dry noodles, yarn....

Day 2: Chapters 4-6, make a parrot and begin the pirate ship.
Literary Elements: setting, character analysis, prediction
Supplies needed: modeling clay, paper, popsicle sticks - whatever your child wants to use to build their ship. The parrot can be made our of clay or paper as well. This craft is done in class, but the outcome of each craft should be somewhat different for each student.

Day 3: Chapters 7-9, make trees, island, ocean, and add details to their ship project.
Literary Elements: prediction, setting, character analysis
Supplies needed: construction paper in whatever color your child would like the trees to be, we will make an ocean as well. This is the class we will be adding final details to their project and they will use their creativity. If your child wants a shiny blue material for water, that is fantastic as well.

Day 4: Chapter 10, presentation of pirate diorama project to the class, retell of story we read by each student
Literary Elements: character analysis, prediction, retelling a story, and pirate ship diorama presentation
Supplies needed: A completed diorama to present to the class.

Supplies: In addition to all the supplies listed by the day, your child will need a small box with sides like a shoe box or something similar to make the project. Your child may use any type of materials: googly eyes, glitter, specialty paper, fake grass, the sky is the limit. You will also need access to a printer to print pages that go along with the story.
