Experiencia de clase

In this class, students will get an introduction to some simple chemistry topics in terms that they can understand! Each week will have a hands-on experiment or activity to reinforce the concept being taught.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Schedule of topics by week:
Week 1- States of Matter
Students will learn about solids, liquids, and gases and be able to label the state of matter for common substances.

Week 2- Phase Changes
Students will learn about phase changes and how substances go from solid to liquid to gas and back. They will conduct an experiment on the melting of different substances.

Week 3- Chemical Reactions
Students will learn about chemical reactions and conservation of mass, see demonstrations of several different kinds of chemical reactions, and conduct an experiment using common kitchen ingredients to see their own chemical reactions.

Week 4- Density
Students will learn about the concept of density, see a demonstration of a density column (with instructions for replicating it at home!) and conduct an experiment on items that float or sink.

Week 5- Solutions
Students will learn about solutions, be able to identify solutes and solvents, and will conduct an experiment where they try to dissolve different powders in water.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Structure of each week:
Each week in the outschool classroom, the following will be posted.

---Post 1: Links to unlisted YouTube channel with that week's videos.---
* Video 1: Review previous week's experiment results (for week 1, this time will be used for an introduction to the class)- The instructor will discuss the students' findings that they shared in the classroom from the previous week.
* Video 2: Introduction to new content: the instructor will describe the science behind that week's concept
* Video 3: Explanation of the week's activity or experiment

---Post 2: Pdf of that week's handouts/instructions---
Each week, I will upload a pdf file that has all of the handouts- written instructions for that week's activity, a worksheet where I ask them to make predictions about what will happen, a worksheet where they can record their observations, and sometimes some extra information about that week's topic.

---Post 3: Student predictions---
Students will be asked to make predictions about that week's experiment BEFORE conducting it. This can be a photo of the prediction worksheet, a short video of them saying what they think will happen, or a typed reply to the post.

---Post 4: Observations---
Students will be asked to post their observations- what they saw during the experiment- and whether or not their predictions were correct.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Student interaction:
Students will be expected to read replies by other students and ask at least 2 total questions per week of other learners- this can be a question about a prediction that they made ("Why did you think that the rock would sink but the orange would float?") or a question about an observation ("What did it look like after they crayon had melted, because mine didn't melt!") More than 2 questions per week is fine! Students are also expected to answer any questions on their predictions or observations.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructor interaction:
I will monitor the Outschool classroom regularly for comments or questions and ask for elaboration or clarification on student posts as necessary. I will also make a video each week specifically addressing the observations that the students made and addressing any issues that came up.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
Students will likely need some adult assistance with the hands-on experiments and activities. All use common household items.
Lista de útiles escolares
Included with the course are pdf files of handouts to print where students will make predictions and observations, written instructions for all experiments, and two bonus experiments. A list of supplies required (common kitchen and household items) will be made available upon enrollment.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with 6.5 years of experience in the classroom. I have also taught freshman college chemistry. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest and motivation- from high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
