Philosophy, put simply, is the love of wisdom. It is the single-strongest tool to solve the widest range of challenges in a person’s life. Philosophy enhances problem solving, helping others, doing well in school, loving life and finding meaning in the world, and so much more. As the great Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Did you know that Philosophy students score #1 on the GRE and LSAT, and that their national median salary is higher than nearly every other major in the social sciences and humanities? Delivered by a teacher with a Philosophy education from Purdue University, this course uses Philosophy as a tool to help students develop essential skills that are foundational for academic success and effective communication. Through the exploration of philosophical concepts such as logical fallacies and the art of rhetoric, as well as a diverse array of fun activities, students will enhance their critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation abilities. Presented as a 4-week crash course, students will finish the module with the following learning objectives: - A better understanding of how to think and what to think about. - Improved public speaking abilities through structured presentations and debates. - Strengthened argumentation skills by learning about logical fallacies, how to spot them, and how to avoid them. - A basic understanding of philosophical inquiry and its application to everyday life.

Hey! My name is Ben Carson, and I’m a lifelong lover of the single most important skill in the world: critical thinking. I quickly found that speech, debate, and philosophy were three of the best arenas to hone that craft and I haven’t given it up since. For the last decade of my life, I’ve been constantly involved in improving my own communication, reasoning skills, and confidence, and figuring how to best pass that on to others. I’ve taught students from 4th grade all the way to college and workplace professionals. Outside of Education, I’ve worn many hats ranging from Entrepreneurship to Mentorship to Philanthropy. Speech and debate has not just changed my life, it revolutionized it. Almost everything in my life today is thanks to the skills of communication, critical thinking, hard work, research, and more that I learned through speech and debate.
I like to approach teaching as identifying a problem and finding a solution. It is a simple fact that every student can learn and excel given the right toolset. With debate and public speaking, some people love it immediately. Others are nervous when speaking for their entire life. But every single person can grow to enjoy and appreciate the activity, and I love helping everyone find their “why.”
