Passport Around the World - Global Social Studies Culture & Geography Class In this ten week course, we will travel around the world through song, folk tales, art, and more! The goal of this course is to gain an appreciation for the world around us, respectfully learn about our similarities and differences, and practice our social studies skills. Each class, we will visit one 1 or 2 countries or continents. For each location, we will: *learn about the geography and climate *look at the map of the country *explore the arts for that country (music, art, dance) *read a folktale from that country *look at short videos and photographs to help us better understand and appreciate the country *explore the flag and the national anthem *learn about special places and monuments *highlight some of the languages that are spoken Some of the tools we will use to help us in our discussions include: *creating Venn Diagrams *interactive discussions *maps and artifacts Class 1: Introductions -The World Map Overview (highlighting all seven continents and five oceans) -Sharing our own origins -Discussing the United States and exploring the 50 states-- with a focus on Washington DC and Alaska Class 2: -Japan (Mount Fuji, kamishibai storytelling, origami, sumo wrestling, bullet trains, cherry blossoms, and more) Class 3: -China (Chinese New Year, lion dance, the Great Wall of China, and much more) Class 4: -Israel (learn a little bit about Hebrew, some of the famous historical sites, learn a song about peace) -Mexico (learn a little Spanish, learn about some traditional holidays, and much more) Class 5: Africa -Overview of Africa (map studies and highlighting the diversity of the continent) -Ghana (learn about chocolate making, Anansi folktales, Kente cloth, Adinkra symbols, and much more) Class 6: Africa, continued -Egypt (focus on ancient Egypt with mummies, pyramids and the Nile River) -South Africa (with a special focus on Nelson Mandela) Class 7: -Antarctica (the animals, weather, and who travels to Antarctica) Class 8: -South America & Australia -Brazil (focus on the Amazon rainforest) -Australia (focus on famous monuments, learn about unique animals, and discover the history of Australia) Class 9: -Native Americans of North America -Focus on the Hopi Native Americans in Arizona Class 10: -Review, Celebration, and Student Choice -We will review some of the facts we've learned about various countries and continents in a game format. -We will celebrate our learning from the previous weeks. -We will also leave time to briefly learn about countries that we didn't study this semester but that students wanted to learn more about. Cameras must be on for the entirety of all of the classes. All learners must be enrolled students; if two learners are sharing a device, both learners must be enrolled per Outschool policies. Students should bring paper, pencils, and things to draw with (markers and/or crayons). Access to a printer for weekly materials. Students are welcome to also bring any artifacts, photos, or maps they have for the location we are studying that week.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Daniel Lipton is a second grade teacher in Brookline, Massachusetts. Daniel has been teaching second grade for more than 18 years. Mr. Lipton has a Master's in Reading Education, a Master's in Education Administration, and a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. Daniel is certified as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, math specialist, and principal/vice principal in the state of Massachusetts. He loves writing children's musicals and runs a summer theater camp. Mr. Lipton also works with students in preK-8 in various after school programs. Mr. Lipton’s passions are integrating curriculum and incorporating the arts into his teaching. Mr. Lipton was a finalist for Massachusetts Teacher of the Year in 2015. Mr. Lipton has two sons (ages 9 & 12) and he is very excited to work with SEG to teach several classes! Mr. Lipton also has two betta fish and a turtle, and despite his sons' protests, loves singing songs from Frozen all the time!!
