Experiencia de clase

In this class, students will create a unique paper cutout collage featuring lush jungle plants and animals. After a quick introduction and before we begin our art, I'll share a slideshow of unique trees, flowers, and creatures that can be found in the jungles of the world. I'll also go over the formal definition of collage and talk about some different materials and techniques I've used in my own collages. We'll talk about how everyday scraps can be repurposed into art. I will guide students as they cut, trim, shape, refine, and/or add detail to their forms. We'll discuss choosing our color palettes, as well as the ways in which texture and pattern can enhance a piece. Once students are ready to arrange their cutouts, we'll talk about concepts such as balance, harmony, and the importance of developing their own original artistic voice. I'll show students how to glue their work down without it wrinkling or buckling, and how to handle mishaps like ripped paper or smeared colors. There will be time at the end for students to share their work and offer one another positive and supportive feedback.

My teaching style is very relaxed and laid-back. I love to chat while I work, so I keep my classes small so that students can feel free to chat and share as they work too if they wish.

Students do not need to have any prior collage experience, but they must be able to handle scissors on their own. An understanding of zoom and mute/unmute is also helpful.
Metas de aprendizaje
After this class, students will have a greater understanding of jungle life and a unique piece of collage art to display. Beyond that, they will also have an enhanced artistic eye, with an appreciation for the way that color and shape work together. They will have increased awareness of their own artistic style, and the confidence to develop that style by utilizing items they may not previously have considered.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been captivated by paper cut out collage as an art form since my first introduction to Henri Matisse in middle school. In 2017, I began selling my own collage art to friends and family, and in 2019, I launched Bramble Schell Studio, my design business where I create stickers, greeting cards, and prints as well as digital pattern and surface work.
