The student will be sent a drawing of the turtle and a video (available also on this listing page) of how to trace this image onto their watercolor paper so that they are ready to paint when class begins.

Experiencia de clase

In this watercolor class, we will create a loose, flowing art piece of a loggerhead turtle. We will learn a little about the loggerheads as we create and I will be demonstrating and painting along with the student. I will show how to use watercolors in a wet-on-wet technique and how to layer more color to create depth and dimension. Then we will learn how to get a more concentrate color for dark area like the eyes.

I like to demonstrate and give student time to explore the techniques on their own while exploring their creativity and their own interpretation of this piece.

This class is one of my designated "Art2Learn" classes, so I will share some facts about these amazing creatures as the students are working on their painting. Students may ask questions as we go and are invited to share their paintings at the end of class (but this is optional and I will not pressure anyone to share).
Metas de aprendizaje
The student will learn how to use watercolor paints by using different amounts of paint and water to create this painting. This is a loose style of painting so that the student can explore how colors work together, and we will learn a wet-on-wet technique that allows colors to run and purposely bleed into each other. They will learn how to correct mistakes and which colors to avoid mixing that will create 'muddy' hues.

For the best results with watercolor painting, the supplies used are very important: paper, brushes and paint. Please do not use the cheapest watercolor paints from the dollar store or discount stores...they will not have enough pigment in them to allow the student to learn how to layer and move color around the page satisfactorily.

-Watercolor paper. (I encourage using the Canson XL Series Watercolor Paper, Wire Bound, 140 Pound, 9 x 12 Inch or 7x10, 30 Sheets). It can be used as an art journal for various classes, but pages are perforated and can be removed easily for framing, if desired). You can find these journals at your local Michaels or on Amazon (https://amzn.to/30v51qG). Watercolor paper is essential to handle the amount of water that will be added during this class.

-watercolor paint set. I recommend a watercolor set that allows for good pigments (which will be lacking in cheap sets at discount stores). I used the Jane Davenport "Sea Glitz" Watercolor set ( https://amzn.to/33LHd45 ), as it has shimmery paints in it. But her 'Brights Palette' has very nice colors as well. If you live near a Michaels, you may find these there with a 40% coupon to make more affordable. (They come in tins that include a 'palette' area for mixing colors and a card for painting painting a swatch of each color in order to choose the correct color they want to use.) I've had my sets for 2-3 years...they are a good quality and last a long time.

- watercolor brushes in various sizes. I like a #10 or 12 Round and a 1/2" Filbert Watercolor brush to start with. (A
very small brush will not work for this technique). These brushes have softer bristles than brushes for acrylic, and if cared for, will last a long time.

- water jar

- paper towels

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.

I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.

I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.

I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny

** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
