In this class, students will learn to mix colors and apply their knowledge to creating a still life, an animal portrait, a landscape, an underwater scene, and a place from their imagination. Throughout the class, I will demonstrate color mixing on my easel, and ask students to hold up their artwork to check how their projects are going. 
Day 1: We will work with primary colors: red, yellow and blue, to mix secondary colors: orange, green and purple. We will use these colors to draw an arrangement of simple objects from observation. Students will also create a color wheel for future reference.
Day 2: We will learn that the opposite colors on the color wheel are called complementary, and that mixing two complementary colors will produce brown or gray. After mixing several browns, students will proceed to draw/paint an lizard in the desert, using as many different kinds of gray and browns as they can.
Day 3: We will look at photos and paintings of landscapes to note the many varieties of green in nature. Students will create an imaginary landscape with trees, shrubs and grass, coloring them with many kinds of greens.
Day 4: I will introduce the idea of warm and cool colors as well as contrast. Students will create an underwater scene, and color the background with cool colors: blue, green and purple. Then they will use the contrasting warm colors to color the underwater creatures in the scene.
Day 5: We will be continuing to talk about cool and warm colors. We will create a picture of a dessert with a vehicle to cross it, rocks and mountains and sand, and talk about how to make this picture appear hot. And, if time allows, we will continue exploring cool colors in another picture of a cold place.
