This ongoing course focuses on learning the essential social-emotional skills necessary for primary-aged students to be successful in society. Each week will focus on various skills using primary literature as the focus point. Although each week will have a different area of interest, every lesson will contain the following key elements: first, the class will share "good things"; second, I will introduce the topic and the book and lead a short discussion regarding the vocabulary used in the book. The discussion will be followed by the main portion of the lesson: reading the book and learning about the day's focus skill. Last, students will participate in a culminating activity focused on review and practice. I teach with the expectation of a high ratio of student-teacher interaction and a brisk pace. Each lesson focuses on developing a social skill which should be practiced in a group of accepting members. The lesson will include slides, teacher-led activities and discussion. The intention of these social-emotional skills development classes will not be to elicit reports of personal experiences with mental health from learners and is not therapeutic in nature. In the event that a learner does share any personal mental health details, I will navigate the discussion toward the subject matter of the day.
