Twenty minutes of reading—with a grown-up! During class, I will ask the learner to show a book of their choosing. The homework is then to read the book together with a grown-up. The goal is to instill a lifelong love of reading in children, best achieved when they make a daily habit of reading with their favorite people. During my early literacy training at the public library, I learned an incredible fact: If a grownup reads to a child every day for just 20 minutes — basically one book a day — the child will hear 1.8 million words in one year. Therefore, Ms. Christina wants each learner to read together with a grown-up every day, a book of their choice in any language — it can even be the same book every day! Then read that book to a pet or stuffed animal so the child can practice without pressure, and even pretend to be the teacher. How fun! Not only will this daily reading habit expose the learner to an incredible number of words, it will instill in them a lifelong love of reading. With reading being the cornerstone of all subsequent learning, the daily reading habit is the simplest, least expensive way to set your child up for a lifetime of success and joy.Experiencia de clase

Let's dive in on your learner's interests! This class sets your child up for a lifetime love of learning. Through one-to-one activities such as interactive songs, action rhymes, games, and books on topics chosen by your learner, they'll expand vocabulary, increase phonological awareness, practice problem-solving, and gain confidence—all at their own pace. My areas of expertise are literacy, international relations, English, German, Mandarin Chinese, and ukulele. For topics outside of my direct experience, I rely on the best books available at the public library, drawing on seven years of working in the children's room of a large public library myself. Let's see where your learner's interests and my expertise overlap! A Typical Class Schedule: > WARMUP SONG OR RHYME > LESSON > DISCUSSION > GAME Topics are learner directed and change from week-to-week. NOTE ON BOOKS We won't read books in class; we will present them to each other, pointing out key information and elements, such as topic, author, style, etc. The point of this exercise is to empower the learner to explore on their own and share what they find. NOTE ON MUSIC I strive to provide a welcoming and loving environment for all learners in my class. I research the history and origins of all the songs I use in my classes and don't use any I find to have hidden or harmful messaging, associations, or history. My own original songs are written with diversity, inclusion, and love for all children in mind.
