One Hour Civics offers a bite sized lesson on the historic roots of our democracy and how the democracy of ancient Greece compares to our modern version.

What did Athenian democratic institutions look like? What principles were they based on? How did they rule? In what style or manner? Do the ancient democratic principles still ring true? Can we find evidence of Athenian democracy in our own constitution?

In this session, we will watch a short video, work through the questions outlined above regarding ancient Greek democracy, complete a brief worksheet, participate in a group discussion to define and identify Athenian democratic principles, and work together to examine the United States Constitution and look for passages that mirror those ancient Greek democratic ideals.
