The actual cutoff scores for admission to each of the Specialized High Schools can also vary from year to year, depending on the number of students taking the test and the scores they achieve. ABOUT SHSAT: The SHSAT is a once a year test for rising high school students in NYC. Part 1 : The ELA revising/editing questions test your ability to recognize and correct language errors and to improve the overall quality of a piece of writing. The first ELA section of the SHSAT exam focuses on students' writing capabilities, specifically how skilled test takers are at labeling and fixing mistakes. There are around 9-19 multiple-choice questions in two parts. Part A challenges test takers with identifying spelling and punctuation errors in a variety of sentences. In SHSAT ELA Part B, students must read several paragraphs on a current subject and find ways to make the writing more effective. Part 2: The ELA reading/comprehension questions test your ability to understand, analyze, and interpret what you have read. In this part of the SHSAT ELA, students must read texts of different genres (such as science fiction or comedy), then answer a series of questions designed to measure how well they understood them. There are 5-6 writing works with up to 10 multiple-choice questions after reading each passage, for a total of around 38-48 questions. There are 4 multiple choices per question. One raw point is given for each correct answer. No points are taken off for wrong answers.
