In this immersive novel study of "Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky," students will explore African and African American mythology, connect these stories to U.S. history and culture, and relate themes to their own lives. The course covers key topics such as cultural identity, historical context, and the hero's journey. Structured around interactive activities, the class includes reading assignments, engaging discussions, and creative projects. We'll watch "Black Panther," read "Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt," and create a story box to deepen understanding. My teaching style is dynamic and student-centered, using lectures, video clips, and discussion to foster a lively and inclusive learning environment. With a blend of analytical and creative tasks, this course aims to make learning engaging and relevant. For more detailed information, please check out the syllabus. Learners will not have any live meetings, and will reference the pre-recorded lecture videos in the classroom. Certificates of completion and grades are available upon request. Feedback is provided at the end of the week, typically Sundays. If work has not been submitted by Sunday, then feedback should be expected by the following Sunday (CT).

Lección 2:
Chapters 14-20
Learners will conduct some research on Gum Baby, then write their own fable. An example and prompts will be provided. Their fable can tie into the novel, or stand alone. Fables are stories featuring anthropomorphized animals, meaning they are the main characters and they think, talk, and act like humans, but in animal form.

Lección 3:
Chapters 21-27
Learners will dive into the mythology and inspirations in Black Panther (2018). They will learn about Egyptian mythology and conduct their own research on some of the inspirations in the movie. I will provide three short topics (funeral practices, all female warrior groups, and symbolism of black panthers), but they can do more if they wish.
