In this 9-week book study, learners will read The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill and be transported to a magical world of a kind witch, a swamp monster, a tiny dragon, and a girl called Luna! Learners will engage in meaningful analysis of the text, including plot, characters, settings, and figurative language. This book study provides opportunities to enhance students' development of critical thinking and make inferences and connections with the book.
Materials will be provided in the classroom to enhance the learner's understanding of the text. These can be completed and submitted to me for feedback. I will answer any questions or assist when needed. Learners may post questions in the classroom or message me privately.
Optional final project: In the classroom, learners are given options for a final project due at the end of the course.
Each year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. In reality, the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind! She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. Xan rescues the children left in the forest and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.
One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge. The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a modern-day fairytale of love and family, of strength and loyalty, of love and forgiveness, good and evil!

As a licensed teacher specializing in Reading, I have had the opportunity to support and engage students with diverse learning needs. My experience has enabled me to develop a strong understanding of different instructional strategies to ensure that all students have the skills necessary for academic success. I am passionate about creating a positive classroom environment that is both supportive and engaging, where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and participating in discussions. With my expertise in Reading instruction, I strive to help each student develop a lifelong love for reading while achieving academic goals.
My passion is literature. I believe stories make concepts more palpable to children. Stories can teach readers valuable lessons, make them laugh, and see things from a different perspective, or take them somewhere new!
When I have time, I like to travel, experience different cultures, and learn the history of people and places. I am also an animal lover! I have two dogs, have worked with animal rescues, and fostered cats and dogs for years.
If you are interested in a class and don't see a time that meets your needs, please send me with your time request. I look forward to meeting your learner in class!
