When a student enrolls for the course, I will share with them a Youtube playlist I've created by exploring dozens of video resources for quality interpretations and video analyses of Poe's "The Raven" that are appropriate for young people. It is a 40 minute playlist of six videos. that is entirely optional for participation in the class. Students who are interested in the topic may enjoy preparing for the discussion. The first video is a slightly edited cartoon version that makes the plot very clear and understandable for young people while retaining 75% of the original language. The second is enacted by a man portraying the narrator while performing the action dramatically on a set with props. Two are only audio interpretations, one by a male and one by a female. The analysis is a great balance of thorough and succinct. It offers great insights into the work. The final version is from a modern staged musical inspired by the poem. Additionally, I will send a crossword puzzle that I have created with 44 prompts for challenging words included in the poem. I will also send a pdf of the original text with the 44 words highlighted to help students match them to their definitions. This too is entirely optional. During the one hour course, I will be prepared to explore plot, theme, personification, metaphor, allusion, simile, imagery, alliteration, assonance, consonance, structure, rhyme scheme, and repetition. We will spend time on the topics the students are interested in. We will discuss the students favorite passages, offering them opportunities to read them aloud and encouraging them to explore various ways to dramatize the piece with vocal changes for different effects. If students wish to, they can then film themselves interpreting the piece of portions of it to share just in time for Halloween.

1) Learners will have an improved understanding of the meaning of Poe's "The Raven."
2) Learners will utilize and enhance their existing language analysis skills to create a more dramatic interpretation of the text.
3) Learners will be able to more confidently perform some portion of the text after encouragement and exploration.

As mentioned above, I will provide a PDF of the poem, a PDF of a crossword, and a Youtube playlist of 6 videos totally 40 minutes. The poem will be the only resource students will definitely wish to consult, but I will provide it on the screen as well.

When I was in 9th grade, I spent the last 20 minutes before I went to sleep every night memorizing Poe's "The Raven" in its entirety. When I went on to act in and direct numerous productions over the following decades, I started using the piece with classes to explore diction, articulation, text research, literary devices, and vocal expression.
