Experiencia de clase

In this one-time class we will practice the special folding needed to create a six pointed snowflake. We will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes and practice using them in our artwork. We will explore the art of papercutting both in Japan and Mexico while we work. And we will brainstorm ways to display our finished paper creations. Sometimes our artwork is a disaster, and we learn, recycle, and start again.

I have taught both basic and advanced snowflake cutting to hundreds of children. I have a second camera in my classroom setup so artists can clearly see my hands and work surface. This project is incredibly fun with lots of opportunities for trial and error learning.
Metas de aprendizaje
We will understand symmetry, and the difference between organic and geometric shapes. We will get lots of practice cutting tricky shapes, and will learn planning and hypothesizing skills.

Orientación para padres
For this class it is helpful if the paper coffee filters can be ironed flat by parents in advance. It is also nice to iron them after the cutting part is complete. This is optional, of course, but makes for a lovely finished piece of art. Your Learner will be using scissors. I recommend the best pair you have on hand, but the project works well with quality safety scissors, like those made by Fiskars.
Lista de útiles escolares
*round coffee filters. It is especially helpful if your parents can iron these flat in advance. We might use up to 20 of these!
*a good pair of scissors, like Fiskars brand
*pencil
*bowl to catch your snippets, which will go everywhere
*one piece of office or school paper, for drawing practice shapes

Outschool Families! I have had to step away from my classroom for a bit here while I look after some elderly family members! Hope to be back very soon. Please add me to your favorites so you are the first to know when new sections are added!

Hello! My name is Diane, and I have been teaching art and STEAM classes to children in public schools for more than 20 years, both in-person and via remote learning.

Our learners today get plenty of opportunities to manipulate data.

But what about measuring, cutting, folding, manipulating, and attaching real objects?

Here in my learning lab I’ve created a series of classes that gets kids making things with their hands. We incorporate math, geometry, physics, and engineering – all in the practical way we approach building and making.

This hand/mind connection gives us greater understanding of how the world around us is put together.

I want all kids to feel confident that they have the skills to make the things they seen in their imagination.

Make something with your hands every day!
