Experiencia de clase

In a time when citizens' responsibility to participate in elections looms larger than ever, it is important to recognize the role of activists who worked to make voting access available to all. In the 1960s Fannie Lou Hamer, a poor sharecropper from Mississippi, stood up for those who had no voice and little chance of participation in elections. She bravely stood up to the long-held power structures and opened up more voting equality for all of us in the United States. Through video clips, primary sources--including Hamer's own words, and interactive discussion, students will gain a better understanding of the ways in which Constitutional rights and responsibilities in the United States have been stretched to better include more of "We the People." A basic knowledge of the American historical timeline will be helpful for students to understand how this fits within the larger contours of the story of the United States.
