Join this class to build community in a small group while learning survival skills and science! Each qualified Outschool educator brings unique gifts and talents to share with your learner, but they are all fun, energetic, and engaging. Signing up for this pod means access to all educators within our team via one single Outschool classroom -- no need to shuffle between Zoom links. This summer term pod is broken up into monthly sections for ease of payment.

In the wilderness, or survival situation, it is vitally important to know how to react when faced with distressing circumstances. The human body is remarkable and can withstand minimal resources. Learners will learn how to react to various external conditions that can be critical to save their life. In this course, we will have an open discussion where students are able to brainstorm ways to react to several situations outlined. Following the peer discussion we will go over the ways to survive those extreme climates, conditions and elements out of our control, such as falling into a frozen water, the best source of protein in the wilderness, what happens to our body in extreme heat, best way to conserve our energy for survival and the best resources to keep our body functional- to name a few.

Students will learn the various ways to locate animal paths to find their resources, learn plant transpiration and how we can gather the water from this process. Each class will have students learning not only impeccable skills but the science behind it. Students will be taught how to source water in many ways and learn how to remove debris and microorganisms. This class will dive into so many fun concepts regarding the human anatomy, distressing conditions, and survival situations all while teaching them the biology of life. Each unit will take place in a National Park, employing not only survival skills but history, geology and more! How, why and what to do when elements are out of their control. Each of these abiotic conditions are unique to the specific National Park(s). We will be applying our new skills in many survival-based scenarios!

Learners will participate in 'escape room' and virtual critical staged situations to not only navigate the wilderness situation but to test their own knowledge.. An example of this can be having students decide which route to take, and how will they determine which path? What identifying markers can they find to help their decision. This class is designed to be a FUN survival based class!

Each unit will take place in a National Park, employing not only survival skills but history, geology and more!
