It's a very exciting time for those who are interested in volcanoes! The major eruption in 2018 dramatically changed the Big Island of Hawaii, including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! The volcano has been erupting off and on ever since, with the most recent eruption on September 29, 2021! This class is part of a "National Parks Passport" series. My hope is that students will gain an interest in learning more about these very unique parks around the United States, which will lead to a deeper awareness of how we can continue to protect and support these special areas. In this National Parks Passport class, we will go in depth exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! The class will touch on various topics including: *History of the Park *Geographical Features *Wildlife *Park highlights *ALL OF THE RECENT ERUPTION ACTIVITY! *Conservation *Other interesting facts This class will be presented via powerpoint presentation and is mostly lectured based, although students will have several opportunities to ask or answer questions. Students will get to explore the park through photos and a few video clips disbursed throughout the class presentation - - I have found that this keeps them interested and engaged throughout our class time together! Although homework is not required, students are encouraged to write a few paragraphs after class, to be read out loud to their families. Students will be encouraged to visit our National Parks and purchase a National Park Passport to keep track of their visits. After the class, students will be given additional resources to continue on their path to learning more about our parks!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Living in Hawaii on the island of Oahu gives me a unique opportunity to teach about what happened in 2018 on the neighboring Big Island of Hawaii! I have been to the park over 50 times, and love to bring my personal experiences to every class I teach. The volcanic eruptions of 2018 and 2020 occurred in an area where I have spent a lot of time, where I volunteer for an annual bike race - - our race course has now been covered with lava! :)
