We will cover the format and content of the National Latin Exam (NLE) for the Introduction and Beginning levels, starting with the NLE Introduction level exam concepts, which also provides an excellent review for students taking the Beginning level. Students taking the Introduction level exam will benefit from the meetings covering the Beginning level, not only for the exposure to the content, but also for topics covered in school courses. Each session will highlight a specific content area of the NLE, including a grammar review, cultural lesson, translation practice, or actual practice with a previous NLE exam. I run a very active classroom where I expect students to lead the discussion by asking questions and practicing with me and one another. I will always be open for questions and feedback during the sessions either through the chat or by the student simply raising their hand. Learners will have immediate access to me during the entire session and with other students during practice. The schedule is as follows: - Week I: Format of the NLE, Introduction level and review of cases of the nouns. - Week II: Review 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension endings of the nouns - Week III: Review all verb conjugations, present and imperfect tenses; the verb "to be" - Week IV: Review adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declensions - Week V: Cultural Lesson - Roman mythology and geography - Week VI: Practice - Translation with grammar questions - Week VII: Practice - NLE, Introduction Exam (previous) - Week VIII: Practice - NLE, Introduction Exam (previous) - Week IX: Practice - NLE, Introduction Exam (previous) - Week X: Format of the NLE, Beginning level and review of cases of the nouns - Week XI: Review 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension endings of the nouns - Week XII: Review verb conjugations, present, imperfect and perfect tenses - Week XIII: Review 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension adjectives - Week XIV: Cultural Lesson - Roman culture and influence on modern societies - Week XV: Practice - Translation with grammar questions - Week XVI: Practice - NLE, Beginning Exam (previous) - Week XVII: Practice - NLE, Beginning Exam (previous) - Week XVIII: Practice - NLE, Beginning Exam (previous) - Week XIX: Cultural Lesson - Roman history I: Aeneas and the Roman Regal Period - Week XX: Cultural Lesson - Roman history II: The Roman Regal Period and Heroes and Villains of the Republic * This class has a prerequisite of at least one year of formal Latin instruction; self-guided learning on apps such as DuoLingo does not qualify. * For a National Latin Exam review course for the Intermediate levels, please see this link: https://outschool.com/classes/national-latin-review-course-with-magistra-brigid-intermediate-levels-o6mGRksT#usWze3rWuA

Orientación para padres
Ancient Rome was a culture of violence; however, the National Latin Exam does an excellent job of presenting Roman culture at an age-appropriate level, and I do not greatly expand on topics that pertain to excessive violence, murder, or suicide. These topics are handled with utmost care and are presented so that they are not all graphic in nature.
