Myths & Legends from Around the World (ages 12-16) In this fun survey style course, we will look at some of the most famous myths from different ancient people and cultures. We will focus each week on a different set of myths. Every class will wrap up with an interactive game! Learning objectives: Students will be able to: -Identify and describe myths of different ancient cultures -Define what a myths is and its elements. -Define the meaning of Hero -Recognize, decode, and use symbolism -Define and identify creation myths and etiological myths -Compare and contrast myths of different cultures This is a weekly 45 minute class. Approximately 1 hour of reading will be assigned each class for homework, along with comprehension activities and worksheets. All materials will be made available through the classroom. At the conclusion of the course, Students will have the option to create their own myth or compose capstone essay to demonstrate and put into practice the learning objectives. The topics covered in class each week will be: Week 1: What is a Myth? (Egyptian Myths) In Class: Discuss Anticipation Guide/Define Myth/Egyptian Myth Introduction Homework: Egyptian Myth Rea/Complete Active Reading Log / Optional Vocab Worksheet Week 2: What is a Hero? (Greek Myths) In Class: Discuss Reading/Define Hero/Greek Myth Introduction Homework: Greek Hero Reading/Complete Active Reading Log / Optional Vocab Worksheet Week 3: What is a creation myth? (Sumerian Myths) In Class: Discuss Reading/Define creation Myth/Sumerian Myth Introduction Homework: Gilgamesh reading/Complete Active Reading Log / Optional Vocab Worksheet Week 4: What is an etiological myth? (Roman Myths) In Class: Discuss Reading/Define Etiological Myth/Roman Myth Introduction Homework: Read Roman Myth/Complete Active Reading Log / Optional Vocab Worksheet Week 5: What is a Legend? (American Legends) In Class: Discuss Reading/American Legend Introduction Homework: Read American Legends/ Optional Final Project

Hi students! Welcome! I'm a High School special education teacher and also licensed 5-12 English Language Arts teacher (state of MA). My passion is English Literature and History. I am a honors graduate of English Literature and Classical Studies from the University of Massachusetts and a US Army veteran. I live outside Boston, Massachusetts where I teach troubled/challenged youth at a private day school.
