This 6 week course will use a different myth or legend each week for many ELA skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, story elements, summarizing, and more. Each week I will provide a story the day before class that students can read. The classes will each begin with a reading of the story, followed by a class discussion, and ending with skills practice. My style of teaching is student centered. I like to allow the students to have fun and feel safe to express their thoughts and opinions. This sometimes leads to lengthy discussions. Therefore, there may be a small amount of homework for the students to complete some weeks. Classes will be taught using Google Slides presentations. Each student will have a shared Google Slide that they will use to read the stories and complete the skills practice pages. The link will be sent to the Outschool messages in the classroom and parent email the day before the first class begins. This will be added to automatically every week before and after class. At the end of the course parents may request a grade and assessment based on the students participation during discussions and skills pages. Parents may also request weekly grades, if they prefer. The only required experience needed for this course is that students will need to be able to read and write at a fourth grade level. Course Syllabus: Week 1 - Gilgamesh and Enkidu Week 2 - Maui and the Sun Week 3 - The Earth and Sky and The Ten Suns Week 4 - Thor and the Giants Week 5 - Thor’s Hammer Week 6 - Balder the Good Some of the skills that will be practiced in this class are: recalling details, conclusions, setting, parts of speech, word meaning, story sequencing, descriptions, making judgements, character descriptions, problem solving, creative writing, inference, and categorizing story events. If you enjoy this course, I offer additional courses in this series. Look for Mythology 1 and Mythology 2, where we will look at Greek, Roman, and other myths from around the world.

Hello, my name is Shanin Hamilton. I am a mom of 3 kids 29, 27, and 18. I have lived on a small, hobby farm most of my life, since 1980, and we have had almost all of the different farm animals at some point. I homeschooled my oldest two kids from primary school thru high school graduation, greatest experience ever! I was a Girl Scout Leader for almost 20 years and have led hundreds of girls and other Leaders. I am also a trained K-8 teacher and have worked with students from 2 years old to 18 years old in both regular education and special education.
I have a Bachelor of Art in K-8 Interdisciplinary Studies. I have worked with students, ages 2 - 18, in multiple different settings including public schools, private daycares, Girl Scouts, and homeschooling my own children from primary school through high school graduation. I have worked as a Teachers' Aid in a 6-8th grade building in all core classes including 6-8th grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geography, Civics, Life Science, and ELA. As a Teacher's Aid, my job was to pull small groups of students and reteach the concepts that were taught by the teacher, but in a easier to understand way for the students that struggled with the concepts. I also worked closely with the teachers to develop class curriculum for both the whole class and for struggling learners. I have over 10 years of experience working with children with both special learning and behavioral needs in a public classroom setting.
My style of teaching is being flexible and fun. That means I let the students’ enthusiasm in the subject drive the lessons, because I believe that kids learn best when they enjoy the topic and can be engaged. I use lots of pictures, slides, games, and student driven discussions.
The classes that I offer are the core math, science, and language arts as well as some creative writing, online tools and organization classes.
I hope to see you, or your child, in my classroom soon! Have a marvelous day.
