Tarea
1 hora por semana. Homework will be assigned at the end of each class. Assignments will include short reading passages with a few questions to answer, online quizzes are through Kahoot!, and the listening selections. The pacing of this course may be adjusted as needed.
Evaluación
Learners will be formally assessed through class participation and weekly assignments. Upon request, the teacher will keep track of assignment grades and provide a grade report. Please let the teacher know if you would like a grade report before class starts.

Music Appreciation - The History of Western Music is an overview of music history ancient to present-day. Learners will study a variety of topics as they travel through time, with a focus on notable composers and their music. 

Each class will follow a similar format beginning with homework check and share. Next a composer spotlight including biographical information and music selections. Lastly, a related activity such as a game or composition. Class will end with an explanation of the week's homework assignments.

Homework is designed to keep students engaged, to prepare students for the upcoming class, and to facilitate a more interactive learning environment. Homework will include short reading assignments with questions, music listening assignments, and online quizzes (Kahoot!). Assignments and resources will be posted on Outschool each week. Learners will be given handouts and materials to use during class as well. 

Below is an outline of the course. The pacing of this course may be adjusted as needed.

Orientación para padres
Learners will need to use scissors to cut apart manipulatives on some weeks. They may prepare the materials ahead of time and might need assistance with using scissors.

Each week learners need writing and coloring supplies as well as weekly handouts that will be posted to the classroom. Scissors, glue and blank paper will be used on some weeks. Optionally, the learner may choose to organize materials in a folder or small binder.

For week 1, learners need 1 number cube (dice) for a game.

For weeks 3, 4, 8, and  10, learners can use instruments or found sounds from home.

For week 7 and 8, learners can use a keyboard, recorder, xylophone, or a virtual instrument that has pitch. If you don't have any of these, the teacher will be using instruments (including on-screen virtual instruments) as well to create a class composition.

Additional materials will be posted on Outschool as needed.

This class is an expanded version of the Composer of the Week ongoing classes and a culmination of lessons that have been created over 29 years of teaching experience. Materials are created by the teacher. This class would be equivalent to a semester of 3rd-5th grade (and beyond) general music and is aligned with national music standards. If you would like a preview of the teacher's structure and style, there are ongoing composer classes that would be a great intro to the teacher.
