In this 6 week, multi day course, your students will have the opportunity to learn about the biomes of the world through a series of student centered activities. Each meeting will focus on a different aspect of biomes and include unique follow up activities. Week 1, Meeting Class will begin with introductions and reviewing the classroom rules. This class will we focused on an overview of the eight major biomes of the world. (Ocean, grassland, polar regions, temperate forest, tropical forest, desert, wetlands, mountains) After an interactive slideshow is presented, students will create their own biome poster. Pictures and labels will be provided for this work. Completed posters may be shared through outschool photo messages or at the beginning of meeting two. Week 2 Meeting This lesson will highlight the specific six parts of a biome.(water, soil, air, plants, animals, energy) through Canva slides and brief video clips. Learners will go on a virtual field trip to a “surprise” biome to identify the parts they see. A matching nomenclature activity will serve as follow up. Week 3 Meeting Writing activities will serve as the centerpiece of this class through a biomes of the world T chart. Each student will be provided with a template which includes a topic sentence, big ideas, transition words, supporting details, and a conclusion. Learners will complete this during class but can add illustrations as optional follow up. Week 4 Meeting This class will take learners to the familiar biome they have in their backyard or neighborhood. We’ll first have conversation about the different types of biomes in our respective areas/neighborhoods. Each student will complete a biome scavenger hunt to look for 10 specific items on an illustrated checklist. We will then compare the items to see the results! Week 5 Meeting Our artistic side will be used in this meeting in which we will complete a backyard biome illustration. Instructions will be given on what to include such as plants, animals and other unique details. I will do an example of my backyard biome before learners will begin theirs. Completed drawings will be shared via Outschool photo messages or at the beginning of the next class. Week 6 Meeting In this final lesson, our class will complete a framed paragraph about four things we can see in the backyard biome. A template will be provided before class and can be customized by each learner depending on the characteristics of their backyard biome. Students will share their completed paragraphs, if desired.

Hello! I am so excited to teach your kiddos on Outschool! I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching over 25 years. I also have a specialty Montessori certificate in grades 1-3, and a TESOL certification credential. For nine years I specialized as a learning Title I learning support teacher with a focus in reading and writing in the language arts curriculum with 5-9 year olds. I have taught 1st and 2nd grade in a Montessori classroom. I love helping children learn to read by teaching the fundamental skills of early reading, grammar, reading comprehension and writing. I also teach many cultures themed lessons for learners where we can enjoy exploring topics of our planet and space together!
I love to help children learn and be successful in the classroom through fun and engaging activities. I like to make classes challenging and rewarding for students, and I have a very student centered approach, which is aligned with the Montessori teaching philosophy. I think of myself as a guide, who always strives to meet children at their instructional level.
Outside of teaching, I am a mother of adult boy/girl twins. My husband and I have a senior rescue terrier named Sandy and we love to go for long walks. I also enjoy living a very healthy lifestyle which includes walking, hiking, yoga, running and enjoying nature whenever possible!
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me. I hope to see your child in the classroom soon!
