1-2 horas por semana. There is homework assigned in this class. The ongoing homework is for students to review vocabulary words using flashcards provided as part of the course materials. Students should ideally spend between 5 and 10 minutes each school day reviewing vocabulary. The ability to recall vocabulary words quickly and correctly fosters the student’s conversational and understanding skills. Additionally, the less time we must spend reviewing prior vocabulary in class the more time that can be spent on new material and conversation practice. In addition to reviewing vocabulary, there may be additional activities assigned as homework such as completing exercises in the textbook.Evaluación

***This version of the class meets once during the week. A twice a week version is also available.*** REQUIRED PRE-REQUISITE: Students must have reasonable proficiency in decoding Hebrew (as acquired in my Hebrew Reading class). Students who have prior Hebrew experience can request an evaluation to determine if their prior knowledge meets the requirements. Join children Ram and Nira along with their robot friend Robo as we explore the language of Modern Hebrew. Utilizing a textbook and curriculum intended for children who recently moved to Israel, students will learn to read, write, speak and understand the language through a variety of activities including oral practice, written exercises, games, and reading. Modern Hebrew Language 1A will cover the first half of the textbook Hakol Chadash Aleph (Units 1-7). This course is intended as a beginner language class for second language study; however, students should already know how to decode Hebrew (as taught in my Hebrew Reading class) prior to enrolling. This class is highly conversational and even students with some previous Hebrew vocabulary may benefit from the conversational skills taught in this course. Students do not need to know how to write in Hebrew (either Block or Script) for this course though it is an asset. Writing in Hebrew Script (also known as Cursive) will be introduced in Modern Hebrew Language 1B. Parents that are unsure about whether this course is appropriate should reach out to me for an evaluation. Please note: *This is a foreign language class. While participation is not required it is a necessary element for student success. Please keep that in mind when enrolling. *All class times are approximate. Class length varies based on student progress and the number of learners. Classes are designed to not run over the allotted time. *All classes will begin on time as long as there is at least one learner in the classroom. If 10 minutes after the start time there are no students in the class the teacher will exit the classroom. This class cannot be taught with no students, so no recordings will be available for classes with zero attendance.

Students will develop and build on skills in the four common language learning areas: listening and understanding, speaking, reading, and writing (limited degree) for the Modern Hebrew language.

This course, along with all my Hebrew courses, is taught from a secular and academic perspective. Parents should note that the textbook utilized is intended for recent immigrants to Israel (the only nation where Modern Hebrew is the official language) and some content does include information about Israeli geography and life.
The textbook can be difficult to obtain so students are encouraged to enroll and purchase the materials as early as possible.
Parents should be aware that Hebrew is a gendered language and that there is no accepted terminology in use for individuals who prefer they/them pronouns. In Hebrew They/Them has two forms: one for a group of men or a mixed gendered group and one for a group of women. Additionally, using plural terms for one individual in a language that is brand new for students may lead to additional confusion Traditionally, when gender is unknown (such as asking, “Who lives in the house?”) it defaults to masculine singular. Students who are interested in taking this class or parents of those students that prefer they/them pronouns should reach out to me to determine what they would prefer to use in context of this class.

Textbook: All students will need to purchase a copy of Hakol Chadash Aleph. Each student should have their own copy as we do write in the book. The book can be purchased from https://www.israelbookshop.com/hakol-chadash-i.html or http://www.sifrutake.com/scripts/main.cgi?action=big&product=EB106. Parents should keep in mind that stock is limited, and shipping times/costs can vary so students should ideally enroll in the class and purchase the text as soon as possible to ensure timely delivery. This text will also be used in Modern Hebrew Language 1B. Students should also have access to a notebook for this class and index cards for making flashcards. Students should also have access to common classroom supplies such as paper, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, etc. There are additional materials and assignments that will be provided by the teacher in the classroom space during the class. Please note that it is expected that students will have these assignments printed out for the appropriate lesson.
