"Why do we need to know this? " The question every history teacher hears. The response I always gave to that question was "Everything that happened in the past affects us today. We don't repeat history as some people claim, but there are definite cycles we seem to keep going through and understanding the past helps us know how to deal with the present and how to face the future." It is important for students to realize that the past affects us today. In order to help students to understand that I try to make connections to between what we are learning and what is happening in the world today. This semester-long American History course will cover the highs and lows of United States History from the Cold War through present times. This course will be set up much like a flipped classroom where students do some reading or gathering of information to get a basis of the knowledge and then during class time we will dive deeper into the information, apply what was learned, and make connections to their lives today. Students will think critically about the connections between past and present and gain a true understanding of our history. The following will be covered: Meeting 1: Cold War Abroad Meeting 2: Cold War at Home Meeting 3: Economic Boom of the 1950s Meeting 4: President Kennedy Meeting 5: Vietnam War Early Years Meeting 6: Vietnam War and its Consequences Meeting 7: Great Society and President Lyndon Johnson Meeting 8: Civil Rights Movement Meeting 9: Civil Rights Continued Meeting 10: Latinos Push for Equality Meeting 11: Women and Native Americans Push for Equality Meeting 12: Nixon and Watergate Meeting 13: Presidents Ford and Carter Meeting 14: Conservatism and President Reagan Meeting 15: Cold War Ends Meeting 16: President GHW Bush and President Clinton Meeting 17: Modern Issues of America at Home Meeting 18: Modern Issues of America Abroad

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Social Studies Center started out with Laura Forde teaching as an individual on Outschool in 2016. She is a licensed Social Studies teacher with a BS in Social Studies Education and a MS in Educational Leadership who has taught since 2003 in both North Dakota, West Virginia and online. As Outschool grew, demand for her engaging, effective classes grew as well. Now an organization of qualified teachers continue to teach the content in a similar format and engagement.
We believe that students need to be engaged and involved in their learning. In our classes, we try to give the kids new information, have them practice it, and then apply it. We also believe it is important that what is learned in class is relevant to their own lives. Having student-centered learning and a tie to their lives helps students retain what they have learned. Our subject specialties are history, government, geography, criminal law, sociology, and other social studies classes.
We love the content we teach and believe that you are never too old to learn more. We continue to challenge ourselves through professional development, books/articles, and research to always be improving and to ensure your child is given the best learning experience we can possibly deliver.
