Learning how to read and comprehend different passages doesn't always come easily for students. Sometimes they may struggle with making an inference at a subtle clue that the author might be sharing, or maybe one of the metaphors goes straight over their head! Whatever it might be, there is always a way to take these difficult and sometimes frustrating concepts and turn them into an enjoyable learning experience!

In this Ongoing class, students will have the opportunity to read through a diverse selection of reading materials 📖 while also learning and implementing different strategies to help improve their overall reading comprehension/fluency. The strategies and stories are rather diverse and were designed and chosen specifically to help students from the 2nd and 3rd grades or Year 3 & 4 UK.

This will be done by implementing a mixture of the different reading materials while also incorporating the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

In addition to developing strong reading comprehension strategies, students will learn about history, art, science and literature through the passages they read each week. Literary terms such as plot, setting, and characters, metaphors and similes, alliteration and onomatopoeia are also taught and explained as they occur in different passages.

During each of the lessons, students will be encouraged to read out loud, ask questions, share their ideas and engage in thought-provoking discussions. They will also be asked targeted retention and discussion-based questions throughout the lesson to help guide the students to a better and more in-depth understanding of what is being read.

While students are reading the passages they will also be able to work on their overall reading fluency. During each of the lessons, I am planning to guide and assist the students to help them improve their pronunciation, speed and expression. I will also utilize those situations as instructional opportunities to help the students work together to identify the meaning of an unknown word, consider the intentions of the author or see if there are any parts of the story that some of the students may not understand.

Learners don't have to attend every class to pick up and practice their skills, as the class is designed for students to be able to either attend regularly or dip in and out as required.

Class Structure:
(Topics and themes will be chosen via the wheel of passages. Students will spin and pick out 1 -2 written pieces to work on for that sessions).

1. The students will then begin reading the story together. We may have different fluency strategies implemented into the lessons such as paired, grouped and silent reading, while also focusing on their speed, accuracy and expression. Students who do not desire to read aloud are not forced to: but are encouraged to do so.

2. We will then pause between certain passages and answer different comprehensive and discussion-based questions. These questions can be focused on a multitude of things including, Main ideas, summarizing, inferences, figurative language, character analysis, context clues, supporting details, point of view, themes, etc.

3. While reading the passages, students may come across an unknown word. We can work together to use different clues, root words and even definitions to find the meaning of the words and how they are used in the story.

4. Students may also be tasked with different group-related activities such as, one student identifying the figurative language used. Another student finding the supporting details and a third student may be tasked with summarizing the main parts of the story.

5. The lesson may end with some discussion and group-led conversation about the passages.

All Reading material will be resources used with permission, public domain works, or material that I have written myself.

**I also offer private individual 1 on 1 tutoring where we can expand on these topics and/or personalize the content for your learner. Please check my availability or contact me for more information.*

About me:

Hello! I’m an experienced and passionate English teacher with a proven track record of teaching in UK schools, Asian classrooms, and ESL programs worldwide. Coming from a mixed-race, multicultural background, I deeply understand the importance of embracing diversity and creating inclusive learning environments. This perspective shapes my teaching style, making my lessons both culturally rich and accessible to students from all walks of life.

Teaching Philosophy:

I believe every student is unique, and my teaching style reflects this. I create student-centered lessons where learners feel empowered to explore, ask questions, and engage actively. Whether teaching in a UK classroom or guiding ESL students in Asia, I adapt my approach to ensure inclusivity and success for all.

My Teaching Style:

Interactive and Engaging Lessons:

I use games, storytelling, and technology to make learning fun and memorable. From interactive apps like Kahoot and Quizlet to hands-on activities, I ensure my students enjoy their learning journey while achieving measurable progress.

Focus on Communication:

For me, language is about connection. Whether preparing students for Cambridge exams (Starters, Movers, Flyers, PET, KET) or day-to-day conversations, I balance grammar instruction with practical communication skills.

Culturally Responsive Teaching:

Growing up in a multicultural environment, I bring cultural relevance into the classroom, celebrating diversity and helping students see language as a tool for exploring the world.

Blended Learning:

I combine traditional teaching methods with modern tools to create dynamic lessons. Whether through phonics for young learners or advanced grammar for older students, I ensure every lesson is engaging and impactful.

Differentiation for All Abilities:

I tailor lessons to suit mixed-ability classes, providing scaffolding for struggling learners and challenging tasks for advanced students.

Experience and Expertise:

In UK Schools:

I have extensive experience teaching KS1 to KS4 learners, focusing on literacy, creative writing, and comprehension. I also support EAL (English as an Additional Language) students, helping them integrate and succeed academically.

In Asian Classrooms:

My time teaching in Asia has taught me how to bridge the gap between rote learning and critical thinking. I encourage students to express themselves creatively while respecting their learning culture.

As an ESL Teacher:

Teaching English as a Second Language is my passion. I specialize in preparing students for Cambridge English exams and designing lessons that make learning practical, fun, and confidence-boosting.

What Makes My Classroom Special:

A welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where students feel safe to take risks and learn from mistakes.
Regular feedback and encouragement to build confidence and track progress.
Lessons packed with visual aids, games, storytelling, and relatable examples to make language come alive.
Why I Love Teaching:
Helping students discover the power of language is incredibly rewarding. My multicultural background inspires me to connect with students from different cultures and help them find their voice. Whether it’s a shy beginner gaining confidence in speaking or an advanced student mastering a complex concept, I take pride in being part of their journey. I love sparking curiosity, encouraging critical thinking, and creating lessons that inspire students to learn and grow.
