Tarea

2-4 horas por semana. As mentioned above, each week we send out an optional assignment on that week's topic (history of skyscrapers, mansions etc). These are fun and engaging projects that often utilize online research. The projects earn the students 2 points towards their team score.

Experiencia de clase

In the Mincraft Building League (MBL), we study and build one city building or structure each class. Students work in groups to create a team name and logo for their architectural team as they compete in "season" against other teams. 

We begin each class by presenting a lesson on the history and architecture of a type of building or city location. Each week, the naming of that week's theme is a surprise but potential weekly themes could include such structures and buildings as bridges, city halls, parks, skyscrapers, airports, stadiums, Main Streets, mansions, malls ant the like. After we learn about the week's chosen subject, each team works to create a version of the building/structure within a Minecraft-like world. 

Then during the week, the students continue working on the project in the world so that it is complete before the next class.  A four judge panel of teachers awards points each week to the student designs based on four categories: creativity, realism, richness of details and personality. Presentation skills are also heavily emphasized in this class. Each class, they present the projects that they created the previous week. We work on these skills throughout the program.

Note on competition: While there are points and winning/losing in the class, we work hard to set expectations of good sportsmanship and plenty of opportunities for each student to earn extra points to stay competitive. This is not a cut-throat competitive atmosphere but rather a guided competition similar to little league or Pop Warner football.

We provide all materials. We use a public domain of Minecraft called Minetest. We provide technical instructions and tech surpport for the installation of the program. We also use Google Sheets and Google Drawings in the class.

Right Brain Curriculum is a Massachusetts-based education company offering engaging, project-based online learning programs. Our mission is to create outstanding, student-centered enrichment programs that allow children to experience real life in a fun, engaging learning atmosphere. Currently, we run four different versions of our Metrocraft class, a civics-based program that takes place in a Minecraft-like world. 

Right Brain Curriculum is managed by Matt Bowling, Education Director and Savvy Reuben, Director of Teaching & Learning

Matt holds a Master's in Education Administration with Principal's license from UMass Boston as well as a Master's in Elementary Education from Northwestern University. Matt has more than 15 years experience as a classroom teacher for grades 2, 3, 5 and 7 in both public and private schools in California and Massachusetts. He has served as a Director of Curriculum and Instruction in both public and private schools in the Boston area.

Savvy has more than ten years experience in education, working in private, public and charter schools in New York City and Boston. 
Her education focused on  teaching, curriculum planning, classroom management and a specialization in autism/intellectual disabilities. She attended Trinity College and Teacher's College of Columbia University.
She absolutely loves teaching and wants every class to be a unique, submersive, and positive experience where students feel free to be creative, take risks, and have a whole lot of fun while learning something new :)
