As a middle school math teacher, I have observed that my students' biggest struggles are not necessarily with understanding the new material, but remembering and applying concepts learned in previous grades. Each week we will focus on one of those commonly forgotten math concepts, which are listed below. Sunday, January 14th: Order of Operations Sunday, January 21st: Working with Decimals Sunday, January 28th: Converting Between Mixed and Improper Fractions Sunday, February 4th: Adding & Subtracting Fractions (Least Common Denominator) Sunday, February 11th: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions (Greatest Common Factor) Sunday, February 18th: Calculating Unit Rates Sunday, February 25th: Converting Between Units Sunday, March 3rd: Converting Between Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Sunday, March 10th: Using Percents to Find Tax, Tip, and Discount Sunday, March 17th: Identifying Proportional Relationships Sunday, March 24th: Making and Solving Equations from Word Problems Sunday, April 7th: Plotting Points and Graphing Lines on a Coordinate Plane Sunday, April 14th: Calculating Perimeter Sunday, April 21st: Calculating Area Sunday, April 28th: Calculating Volume Sunday, May 5th: Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Integers Sunday, May 12th: Multiplying and Dividing Positive and Negative Integers Sunday, May 19th: Simple Statistics (Mean, Median, and Mode) These small group classes will be taught using Google Slides and various math games that I have created using Google Apps (Slides and Sheets). Each class will start with a Warm-Up question as well as introductions. Then I will go over any relevant vocabulary. Next, the learners will complete work as a group and discuss the different ways to solve various problems. Finally, the learners will play a game to reinforce the skills learned during the class. My goal is to have the learners use each other to come up with a solution and to have fun learning math!
