In this class, we will read and discuss fantasy books. Each book will need to be read before class and there will be two weeks to read each book. Class will start with introductions and conversation before moving into discussion, which will consist of general questions and then discussion questions about what was read. Students do not have to attend each class; they can choose to attend class for only the books they want to read.

Hello, everyone! My name is Kayla Grose. I love to teach classes that deal with reading and books. Books can do so many different things to enhance one's life and I love seeing people, particularly children, discover what you can learn through books. You can visit other countries or worlds, see how other people might live their lives (as though looking through a window), or see yourself represented in a book (as though looking in a mirror). Books can help us to learn about so many things and I hope your learner discovers this through reading.

I am a librarian in a public library with a focus on youth services. I now work in adult services, but I have done story times in both the library and local elementary schools. I have also done book clubs in the local high school. I taught English as a second language to children in China for several years. I have also given flute lessons before. I have a Bachelor's degree in History and Sociology & Anthropology and a Master's degree in Library Science. 

I love to encourage the students I deal with to think freely. It is fascinating hearing how different people interpret different books. Sometimes everyone thinks roughly the same thing; other times the thinking on a book is varied and leads to a great discussion. Everyone reading a certain book may not be viewing it the same way. Some may be looking at the book through a window, seeing something that they haven't personally dealt with or seeing a culture, race, etc. and the struggles they have. Some students may be reading the book through a mirror, seeing themselves and their own struggles in the book. I love to hear different thoughts on the books and how it may have helped a student or even changed their way of thinking. 

In my free time, I love reading, playing with my animals, and traveling! I love going on hikes and learning new things. I'm currently trying to learn to crochet and knit and I would love to start learning to paint.
