*During the COVID-19 Crisis, I will be sending lessons two at a time for two weeks so students may work ahead if they wish. I will still be available for the full four weeks to answer questions or comment on progress.* Quick recall of basic math facts is essential as students progress into higher level computation. They should not have to use repeated addition for every multiplication problem they come across. However, for many learners, simple memorization is not effective. They need strategies to figure out answers quickly in ways that make sense to them. In these lessons, we will cover 6 simple techniques to decipher the 100 multiplication facts ranging from 0 x 0 to 9 x 9. Students will learn the strategies and then practice them through collaborative games. They will also learn that some math problems can use multiple strategies to determine the answer. After each lesson, the students can take a timed math facts test on their own to show how much quicker this skill is becoming. Learners will need access to a printer since we will use printouts for each lesson. They will also need a general understanding of the concept of multiplication and be somewhat familiar with the times tables. Our goal is to make them faster with their facts and to help them with specific facts that they have trouble remembering. This is a flexible schedule class that will NOT have live meetings. A lesson video and materials will be sent each week and can be viewed on the student’s schedule. Each student is expected to complete the material during the week and send photos to me through the classroom page on the website. I will provide feedback for those assignments, as well as respond to any questions or comments. Once a week, a discussion question will be given for the whole group of learners to respond to on the classroom page as well. This type of class is geared toward students who cannot take the live classes on the schedule that I have available. It is also ideal for students who are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the online format where live interaction is expected. It may be helpful for an adult to view the lesson with the child to assist with directions and sending completed work to me. Week 1: Examine the Commutative Property that shows the order of the factors is irrelevant. Strategy 1: Zeroes and Ones Strategy 2: Five Facts *These 2 strategies can be used on over half of the facts. Week 2: Strategy 3: Doubles Apply this principal to skip counting. Answers will always be even. Strategy 4: Squares (Both factors are the same.) Week 3: Strategy 5: The Nines I will demonstrate three different strategies to make the nine facts easier. Week 4: Strategy 6: Slicing (This can be used for all "leftover" facts.) Review all 6 strategies through quick recall and games.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in mathematics. Each student has different learning styles and simple memorization is not always the best way for a child to recall basic math facts. I have used these techniques with students needing to become more confident and quicker with multiplication and have seen marked improvement.
