Welcome future biologists and naturalists! Do you think bats are dangerous or do you think they'd make good pets? Well, it turns out neither is true and they've got more to fear from us than we from them. They are creatures of the night and biologists that study them also become creatures of the night! This class is perfect for a young learner who wants to learn how we study bats in the wild. Students will learn about how we catch them, unharmed, and tag them with little radio transmitters or lights to study what they do on their travels in the dark.
Below is an example of what a class session could look like:
5 minutes-- Introductions and gathering note-taking materials
20 minutes -- The teacher talks about his experiences of studying bats and shares some slides showing different bats and biologists in their gear. The teacher also asks a lot of questions about each student's own ideas and experiences. What have you heard about bats in your area?
5 minutes-- Invitation to Investigate- Learn how you can help bats and what their conservation status is in your area. The teacher will share resources such as weblinks and pdf files with more information about bats.

Come along, and enjoy this interactive discussion and fun way to learn about bats and their biology! Previous attendance or knowledge is not required. This one-time class meets once a week and can lead to more classes all about biology, the study of life.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will improve their understanding and learn about bats in their own area and from other parts of the world as students share their own experiences and stories. Maybe you've had bats in your attic!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology/Evolutionary Biology. I have worked for several seasons in the field researching bats, owls, frogs, snakes, and their interaction with their environment and sometimes with people. I care very much about the welfare of wildlife and hope I can convey that appreciation to your learner.
