In this class, students will learn the names and functions of the 12 cranial nerves - these are pathways of sensation and movement going in and out of the brain. After a description of the function of a nerve, students will be asked to suggest ways of checking whether the nerve is functioning properly, and will discover some of the tests used by medical professionals and researchers to do just that.

Some of the tests are appropriate for trying out themselves, therefore students will be invited to try actions such as: make facial movements/expressions, touch their face with their finger or an object; make eye movements; move objects in front of their eyes; look at a light; taste something; and listen to a sound. These actions are optional but a good way to make the topic memorable!

Students are welcome to join without prior experience/knowledge, though some prior introductory study of either the cranial nerves, the brain, or the eye is likely to be beneficial.
