Experiencia de clase

This is a preparatory course for students who will be pursuing a career in healthcare. Medical Basic 101: The Digestive System is a rudimentary class, which means the student is not required to have prior health/biological knowledge. The students will build a fundamental understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system. By having this knowledge, the student will understand what occurs within the human body after the consumption of food. In this session, the student will learn about: the two digestive mechanisms, the major digestive enzymes and their importance (e.g. amylase, lipase, protease, etc.), the general anatomy of the digestive tract, learn the purpose of the gastric secretions (juices) and the basic functions of the gastric cells in the stomach. In addition, we will discuss in-depth the functions of the liver and pancreas pertaining to the digestive system. This is an interactive class where we will discuss a medical case study, have class discussions, and have review questions.
Metas de aprendizaje
The student will gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of digestion, the functions of digestive organs, the purpose of each major digestive enzyme, and recognize the general anatomy of the digestive system.

Classwork:
The science courses that will be taught are rudimentary, which means the student is not required to have prior science/biological knowledge. These classes are for any child who wants to take the scientific approach to understand the world around them.

The medical classes are geared towards students who are planning on pursuing a career in medicine (e.g., Physician, Physician Associate/Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner, Nurse, etc.). My classes are introductory, meaning we are laying the ground for a strong foundation for those interested in medicine. These classes are a perfect way to understand and learn the basics, which will help the student succeed in future medical-related courses.

Teaching Experience:
I have more than eight years of experience as a science tutor and four years of experience as a university teacher assistant (TA). I am a firm believer that education should not be "one size fits all", and as such, I implement different teaching strategies. I try to make my lesson fun and interactive so that student is attentive and learning. I regale my students by telling stories and talking about relevant personal experiences. I like to incorporate summary and review questions at the end of the session to evaluate the comprehension level of the students based on the material that was taught.

As a teacher, I aim to equip my students with skills and methods that can be utilized for real-world applications. These skills include problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, study skills, and more. These skills will help prepare your child to successfully achieve his or her goals both inside and outside of school.

My Background:
As a child, I was always interested in science, especially the way in which our bodies function. And it was due to this curiosity that I pursued a Bachelor's in Medical Biology and then a Master's in Public Health. I worked as a genetic researcher for three years, and my job entailed understanding/discovering the cellular and molecular relationships between a particular gene. Specifically, my role was to find out if this gene caused an immune response. Currently, I am conducting research on pain management by using photon therapy.

About Me:
I love trying different food and traveling. I usually split my time between two cities, New York and Montreal. I have a strong affinity for those cities because that's where I was raised. If I am not working in the lab or teaching, I like to play video games, watch movies, and read novels/manga.
