Experiencia de clase

This course is appropriate for advanced 3rd graders, and on-pace 4th through 6th graders. Students are exposed to about 10-15 new words per week. This method of teaching vocabulary and spelling goes beyond the traditional approach of simply assigning words for the week and was created with well-grounded research on what students need to develop a rich vocabulary.

Students are not wasting classtime by writing down definitions! This class teaches vocab and spelling through conversation, writing prompts, and games! There is a focus on common words that share roots. Example words: (habitual, habitat, genial, generation)

Class breakdown:
Class 1:
1. Vocab warmup (test prep practice)
2. Intro to words using memes, pictures, jokes, etc. Discussion around the words
3. Application of the words (changing suffixes, writing, etc.)

Class 2:
1. Vocab Warmup
2. Review Games/Activities
3. Spelling Quiz (students spell words on paper and self check themselves)
4. Vocab Quiz (Google Forms)

Metas de aprendizaje

•Focuses on making connections between new vocabulary and personal experiences, rather than simply memorizing a list of generic definitions and words.

•Allows students several opportunities to play with words and their meanings, thinking deeply about how words can change meanings based on the context in which they appear.

•Teaches students to notice word meanings and how those meanings impact the overall message of a text or oral conversation. Students learn spelling word patterns

•Helps students understand the value of having a rich vocabulary.
